Welcome to horse race results from the weekend featuring race results from Colonial Downs, Saratoga, and Del Mar. This past weekend featured Arlington Million Day with our trackside coverage and experts on site at Colonial Downs. Saratoga's highlight of the night consisted of the Jim Dandy (G2) with Breeders' Cup implications at Del Mar with the Clement Hirsch (G1).

Colonial Downs

Arlington Million (G1)

Winner: Burnham Square | Jockey: Brian Hernandez Jr. | Trainer: Ian Wilkes

Odds-on favorite Burnham Square toughed out a victory despite a suboptimal set-up in Saturday’s 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million (G1) at Colonial Downs. By finding a way to win regardless, the Ian Wilkes trainee reiterated his status as the leading U.S. contender for the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), back up in his 1 1/2-mile wheelhouse.

With regular pilot Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard, Burnham Square was reserved about four lengths off the steady pace. He would be the only closer to get involved, repaying his rider’s faith in his acceleration.

As front-running Layabout posted splits of :24.18, :48.85, and 1:13.70 on the firm outer turf, Gran Oriente kept tabs in second. Dresden Row also raced within striking range in third, until the complexion changed on the far turn.

At the wire, Burnham Square maintained a half-length margin over Gran Oriente, who just saved second by a nose from Dresden Row. Layabout reported home another neck adrift in fourth.

Beverly D. (G2)

Winner: Gimme a Nother | Jockey: John Velazquez | Trainer: H. Graham Motion

Unbeaten in South Africa, Gimme a Nother was knocking on the door in North America until her breakthrough in last September’s John C. Mabee (G2) at Del Mar. The Newstead Stables runner promised to keep her momentum going in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), only to be ruled out by an ill-timed setback.

Gimme a Nother is once more on the Breeders’ Cup trail this season, arguably better than ever. She rolled by 3 1/2 lengths in her comeback, the June 13 Eatontown (G3) at Monmouth Park, and made it three graded stakes in succession here.

But Achieve, a 9-1 shot in her stakes debut, nearly stole the 1 3/16-mile prize. One likely pace rival, Storm Miami, scratched in favor of Sunday’s rescheduled Glens Falls (G2) at Saratoga (as did fellow cross-entry Venencia). The other potential pacesetter, 2.60-1 second choice Stellify, didn’t break sharply in her belated reappearance, and never got close to the front.

That left Achieve in the enviable position of controlling speed. The daughter of Triple Crown champion Justify got away with fractions of :24.77, :49.34, and 1:13.41 on the firm outer course. Her nearest pursuer, Crevalle d’Oro, did not apply any pressure before retreating. Somethinabouther, who had been stalking in third, took over the chasing spot as they swung into the lane.

Gimme a Nother, fourth for most of the way, was given her cue to advance, and the champion responded. Although Achieve still had something left up her sleeve, and Somethinabouther got the jump on Gimme a Nother, they could not hold off her relentless closing kick.

Along in time to collar Achieve, with Somethinabouther another neck back in third, Gimme a Nother clocked 1:54.28.

Stellify stayed on well to finish a clear fourth, suggesting that she can move forward with a more characteristic trip next time. Fast Market, Haute Diva, Way to Be Marie, Pin Up Betty, and Crevalle d’Oro concluded the order under the wire. Daisy Flyer was withdrawn along with the Glens Falls-bound Venencia and Storm Miami.

Secretariat (G2)

Winner: Supercharger | Jockey: Manuel Franco | Trainer: Cherie DeVaux

Supercharger has been a work in progress. The Constitution colt began to turn the corner with back-to-back maiden and allowance scores at Churchill Downs. The bay continued his ascent here as the 3.20-1 second choice, despite his tendency to have a problematic start.

Taking a bobble out of the gate with Manny Franco, Supercharger recovered and settled comfortably off the pace. Up front, Conducted was eager to carve out splits of :23.40, :47.68, and 1:11.06.

Alpyland appeared to be well placed in a stalking position. As the favorite pounced entering the stretch, he hinted that a third straight stakes victory was within his grasp.

But inside the final sixteenth, Supercharger and Infiltrate were both kicking into top gear. Supercharger found a tad more than Infiltrate, who was making his turf and stakes debut off an eight-month layoff, to score by a half-length.

Infiltrate ran a mighty race in second, a neck up on Alpyland. Fuzzbuster held fourth by a half-length from the mildly-closing Turf Star. Next came Conducted, Street Beast, and the ever-trailing longshot Vino Solo. Redland Rebels was scratched.

Supercharger, who covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.24, returned $8.40. His resume now reads 6-3-1-0, $467,709.

Saratoga

Jim Dandy (G2)

Winner: Renegade | Jockey: Irad Ortiz | Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Luck finally went Renegade’s way on Saturday, as the dual classic-placed colt mowed down Commandment in the final sixteenth to capture the $485,000 Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga.

It was a record-extending ninth win in the Jim Dandy for trainer Todd Pletcher in the 1 1/8-mile test for three-year-olds, and a record-equaling fourth for Mike Repole, who owns the son of Into Mischief in partnership with Robert and Lewana Low. The Jim Dandy was Pletcher’s fifth win at Saratoga on Saturday.

Despite the apparent lack of pace on paper, Renegade was backed down to strong favoritism in the five-horse field, starting at 1.19-1. The fractions, set by Ohio Derby (G3) winner Chip Honcho, were not overly quick -- :23.46, :47.82, and 1:12.30 – but that colt and Southwest (G3) winner Silent Tactic, a stalking second, eventually yielded to the classier Commandment and Renegade.

Commandment, who was never more than four lengths off the lead in his first race wearing blinkers, got first run, but Renegade closed stoutly through the stretch. Erasing an 11 1/2-length deficit, Renegade eventually prevailed by a half-length.

“I was just concerned that he was so far back, but I mean, that was part of the strategy that Irad and I talked about, it was ‘let him be him,’” Pletcher said. “Hats off to Irad to have that much confidence in a horse to allow him to get that far back and ride him patiently. I’m glad it worked out.

Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Renegade paid $4.72 after covering one lap of Saratoga’s fast main track in 1:49.08.

Commandment finished two lengths ahead of Silent Tactic, who had a dozen lengths on Chip Honcho. Asked and Answered, a maiden, trailed throughout.

Del Mar

Clement L. Hirsch (G1)

Winner: Eunomia | Jockey: Micah Husbands | Trainer: Saffie Joseph Jr.

Saratoga shipper Eunomia sprang a 12-1 upset in Saturday’s $402,000 Clement L. Hirsch (G1) at Del Mar. The latest Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee to plunder a major race on the California circuit, she scored her first graded victory in this “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).

At the opposite end of the career arc, defending champion Seismic Beauty threw in another clunker as the 3-2 favorite. The handwriting was on the wall early, as the Hirsch unfolded very much like her flop in the May 30 Santa Margarita (G2) at Santa Anita.
