In the wake of Tam Tam’s wire-to-wire success in the $732,188 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) at Keeneland on Saturday, trainer Phil Bauer noted that “good horses take you places.” Tam Tam, a three-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, has certainly done that, registering Grade 1 wins in California and now Kentucky. Perhaps the only place for her to go is further up.
Under Junior Alvarado, Tam Tam made a comfortable lead in the Queen Elizabeth, contested over nine furlongs on a turf course rated good. Arguably traveling better than the honest fractions of :23.55, :47.81, and 1:12.88 suggested, Tam Tam found plenty in the stretch to repel her nine challengers, extending her lead to 2 1/2 lengths at the wire.
“She was cruising, she looked good,” said Bauer, who trains Tam Tam for owner Richard Rigney. Third choice in the wagering at 4-1, Tam Tam finished up in 1:49.91 and paid $10.54.
