Best Bets for the 2025 Remsen Stakes

Read the full analysis here: Tipsheet: 2025 Remsen Stakes

A full and well-matched field of 12 juveniles will travel 1 1/8 miles on the Aqueduct dirt in Saturday’s ultra-competitive, $250,000 Remsen S. (G2). The 2026 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series contest will reward the top five across the wire with qualifying points on a 10-5-3-2-1 basis. Here are some best bets to consider.

Remsen Stakes Picks

  • #2 Paladin
  • #9 Renegade
  • #11 Talkin

Remsen Stakes Wagers

Top Horses for the 2025 Remsen Stakes

#2 PALADIN: Top pick was elevated to first in his debut offering, going one mile on the course on Oct. 17 for Chad Brown, and I think that the son of Gun Runner is a really nice prospect. The chestnut colt earned a 100 Brisnet Late Pace rating in his unveiling and gives the impression of a youngster that will thrive with additional distance going forward. Top pilot Flavien Prat retains the ride.

#9 RENEGADE: The $975,000 son of Into Mischief rallied into a moderate pace to cross the wire in first, only to be taken down to second, in a fine maiden effort last time out for Pletcher. The January foal showed vast improvement after his first run and is a prospect who appears to have a bright future. His 104 Brisnet Late Pace rating at eight panels suggests that the move to 1 1/8 miles will be to his benefit with Irad on board.

#11 TALKIN: Good Magic colt has registered two very good races to begin his career and has to be considered despite drawing wide. The $600,000 yearling purchase, who defeated an excellent group on debut prior to checking in second in the Champagne S. (G1), seems well-suited to handle two turns for the first time on Saturday. Kendrick Carmouche will be in the irons atop the win threat.

#1 Day One Starter             ***

Pro: Strong maiden win, but didn’t run to his best in Nashua S.

Con: Well beaten in two of three starts, so might not be quite this caliber yet.

#2 Paladin                                   *****

Pro: Has parallels with Sierra Leone, who Dornoch nosed out in 2023 Remsen.

Con: Figures to run big, but hard to envision getting a respectable price.

#3 I Did I Did                              **

Pro: No faults from a pedigree perspective and Maker barn hot this meet.

Con: Made no headway in Street Sense (G3); this spot is notably deeper.

#6 Courting wins with #3 Grittiness second and #5 Stream It third at Aqueduct.

#4 Grittiness                             **

Pro: Adds blinkers, and two turns is likely to be beneficial.

Con: Pletcher's third-stringer is still a maiden; perhaps better further down the line.

Chambersville wins at Keeneland.

#5 Chambersville                 *

Pro: Has yet to run on dirt, but surface perhaps not a significant issue given pedigree.

Con: Doesn’t look quick enough to hang with these now.

#6 Courting                                ****

Pro: Half-brother to Clairiere, who won comfortably second out; distance likely to help.

Con: Needs to quicken a little, figure-wise, to make the frame.

Igniter breaking his maiden at Aqueduct

#7 Igniter                                      ***

Pro: Stepped up to win second out over a mile; form of both runs has held up.

Con: Pedigree suggests one turn might be more his forte.

#8 Concarneau                      *

Pro: Graduated at Parx by open lengths, albeit in a modest time.

Con: Hard to make any case after the Laurel allowance debacle.

#9 Renegade                            ****

Pro: Made noticeable progress second out despite DQ; distance will help more.

Con: FWIW, Derby Future wagerers much prefer Paladin’s potential upside.

Balboa.

#10 Balboa                                    **

Pro: Former California mainstay overpowered Laurel stakes rivals.

Con: Very good at sprinting, but nine furlongs is an entirely different ballgame.

#11 Talkin                                       *****

Pro: Beat Further Ado on debut and distant second in Champagne (G1).

Con: Wide draw seems to be the only serious drawback.

#12 Probably Dreaming     **

Pro: Dual stakes winner might appreciate return to two turns after Nashua third.

Con: Seemingly a cut below on class and post a major hurdle.

Best Bets for the 2025 Cigar Mile

Read the full analysis here: Betting With, and Against, Phileas Fogg in the Cigar Mile Handicap

An excellent and well-matched field of seven will go the one-turn mile at Aqueduct in Saturday’s important $500,000 Cigar Mile H. (G2). Suburban S. (G2) hero #6 Phileas Fogg (9-5) has been installed as the deserving morning-line choice for the tilt for trainer Gustavo Rodriguez. However, if you're not convinced of the favorite or like to play it on the edge, check out these best bets for with and against Phileas Fogg.

Phileas Fogg – With

Phileas Fogg – Against

  • $3 superfecta key 7 with 1,4,6 ($18)
  • $1 trifecta 1,4,7 with 1,4,6,7 with 1,4,6,7 ($18)

Top Horses for the 2025 Cigar Mile

#6 Phileas Fogg (9-5), the son of Astern, was claimed in July of 2024 and moved to the dirt thereafter, and the gelding hasn’t left the surface since. He has had a very good 2025 with a handful of top-two finishes from six outings, with three coming at the graded level, including a close second in the Woodward S. (G2) in his latest venture. The bay sports a 5-2-3-0 mark on the oval and drilled a bullet four panels on Monday in preparation for the event, which will see the five-year-old being equipped with blinkers. Joel Rosario has the assignment.

#7 Bishops Bay (2-1) is a logical alternative to the favorite for conditioner Brad Cox. The Uncle Mo five-year-old is two-for-two over the course; he is three-for-three at the distance, and the bay has a nose for the wire, evidenced by his 8-for-12 lifetime mark, too. He bagged the Forty Niner S. (G3) under similar conditions on the oval in his latest appearance and has posted two maintenance drills in the interim. Flavien Prat will have the talented win threat forwardly placed from the break.

#4 Crazy Mason (7-2) is a one-run closer with a robust turn of foot who can’t be ignored in a field with ample pace signed on. The gray son of Coal Front loves Aqueduct, and a one-turn mile might be right in his wheelhouse for Greg Sacco. Irad Ortiz picks up the ride atop the smart colt.

#1 Doc Sullivan (5-1) is a New York-bred facing open company in the competitive contest, but the four-year-old fits well despite the class rise. The John Ortiz charge romped home in a stakes tilt on the surface last time out and held up well in a pair of graded tries in the Empire State earlier this season, too. The Solomini four-year-old will stalk the pace from the fence beneath Ricardo Santana, Jr.

Pick 4 of the Week: Aqueduct Saturday [Dec. 6, 2025]

Six black-type races will be hosted by Aqueduct on Saturday, with four of them being of the graded stakes variety. I’ll take a swing at the all-stakes Pick 4 that concludes the fantastic card.

50-cent Pick 4: 8,10,11 with 2,9,11 with 1,4,7 with 2,5,7,8 ($54)

Best Bets for the 2025 Allen Jerkens Handicap

Read the full analysis here: Exotics Plays for the H. Allen Jerkens Handicap

A field of eight will travel the unique distance of two miles on the Gulfstream Park grass in Saturday’s $100,000 H. Allen Jerkens H. I thought that the win by #1 Risk Manager at Kentucky Downs going 1 5/16 miles three back was an excellent one, and I will tab the chestnut for success in this spot.

Jerkens Exotics

Top Horses for the Allen Jerkens Handicap

#1 Risk Manager, trained by Mike Maker, the seven-year-old is an 11-time winner on the sod with one of those tallies coming at Gulfstream, and he brings solid form to the field. The talented late runner has been first or second in five of his last six appearances, and he will benefit from breaking from the rail to save ground throughout the tilt, as well. Edgard Zayas will be in the irons atop the Kentucky-bred.

#6 Belouni was claimed two back by Jorge Abreu and was last seen finishing a good second behind the top pick at Aqueduct in his latest venture. The bay five-year-old is a mystery at the distance, but he is cut out to run all day, and I expect the French-bred gelding to thrive at the trip for a crafty conditioner. He has useful positional speed and will get the jump on the deeper closing types with Edwin Gonzalez taking the reins.

#7 Padiddle owns a win and a third from two lifetime runs on the surface and comes in fresh for his first assignment for conditioner Elizabeth Dobles. By Empire Maker, the five-year-old gelding compiled a pair of graded stakes placings marathoning on the grass earlier in the season and surely has to be considered in everything. The Kentucky-bred will have Miguel Vasquez in the stirrups.

Fully Subscribed wins the 2025 Mother Goose (Coglianese Photography)#3 Summer Cause has improved some since moving to the grass at extended distances and was a stakes third with the removal of blinkers at Monmouth Park two back. The Summer Front five-year-old has posted four morning drills in advance of this tilt and should be ready. The exotics contender will rally from off the pace with top pilot Tyler Gaffalione in the irons.

How to bet the Comely Stakes

Eight three-year-old fillies will go 1 1/8 miles on the Aqueduct dirt in Sunday’s $200,000 Comely S. (G3). #6 Fully Subscribed was last seen dominating her foes in the Mother Goose S. (G2) on the course and is hard to go against in the tilt. Trained by Chad Brown, the chestnut filly has improved her Brisnet Speed rating in each lifetime try to date, and the daughter of Tiz the Law has also gotten better as the distances have increased, as well.

Comely Wagers

  • $3 trifecta key 6 with 2,5,7 ($18)
  • 50-cent superfecta 6 with 2,5,7 with 2,5,7 with all ($15)

How to bet the 2025 Starlet Stakes

Conditioner Bob Baffert will saddle three of the six juvenile fillies set to go postward in the $200,000 Starlet S. (G2) at Los Alamitos on Saturday. Of his trio, I will give top billing to smart debut winner #6 Nimah (6-5) in the affair.
