Horse Racing Tournament Weekend Recap

The highlight from last week in TwinSpires Tournaments was the $1,000 KDBC/BCBC Qualifier at Saratoga on Saturday.

That tournament had a massive 117 entries and gave away 5 KDBC seats and 3 BCBC seats! Steven Wells hit it big in the Saratoga Derby with both a straight Double from the previous race and straight Win bet on Glacius that helped convert his $500 starting bankroll into over $7,000!

That was enough to give Wells the win and a BCBC seat. Jill Matzat finished with a bankroll over $6,400, while Kathleen OKane finished with a bankroll over $5,000 to win the other two BCBC seats.

The five KDBC seats went to Brian Lussier, Christopher Larmey, Jeff VanDrie, Matt Miller, and Philip Fairbanks. Matthew McJunkin got a nice consolation prize of $3,500 for finishing in ninth place.

Session 1 of the TwinSpires Tour completed this past weekend and Darren Schweiger took home the session and won $2,500. Steven Zehr got $1,500 for second and Matt Miller got $1,000 for third. Session 2 kicks off this weekend!

This weekend highlights the $1,000 King’s Plate Contest hosted by Woodbine on Saturday that can be played on multiple ADWs including TwinSpires. On Sunday, we have both a $600 SSBC Qualifier and a $140 Bet and Set King of the Turf Qualifier at Saratoga.

What are the rules of horse racing tournaments?

1. Bankroll Formats

Mythical Bankroll: Players use a simulated, fictitious budget to place bets. No real money is risked beyond the initial tournament entry fee.

Live Bankroll: Players use real money to establish their tournament bankroll. Real wagers are placed on the tracks, and players keep their remaining bankroll alongside any winnings.

2. Race Selection Formats

Mandatory Races: The tournament organizers select specific races, and every participant must place a wager on those exact events.

Optional Races: Players are given a roster of eligible races and have the freedom to choose which ones to play to meet the required total race count.

3. Wager Restrictions

Most contests limit participants to specific, standard bet types (typically Win, Place, or Show) to ensure fair competition.

4. Selection Deadlines

Pick and Pray Contests: All selections for every race in the tournament must be locked in before the post time of the first race of the day. No changes can be made once the tournament begins.
