It's time for our horse racing tournament talk. We will gather every week to discuss last weekend's tournaments, assess upcoming tournament potential and congratulate our weekend winners. Join us as we bring you everything you need to know about upcoming tournaments. 

Horse Racing Tournament Weekend Recap

The highlights from last week in TwinSpires Tournaments were three major qualifiers at Churchill Downs throughout Memorial Day weekend.

• Saturday's $1,000 NHC Qualifier
• Sunday's $140 Bet and Set SFBC Qualifier
• Monday's $1,000 KDBC/BCBC Qualifier

This weekend's horse racing tournaments' big winners

On Saturday, the $1,000 NHC Qualifier had 43 entries and gave away 2 NHC seats as well as $6,500 in cash prizes. Matt Miller took home the win, as well as third place with his second entry for some extra cash. Darren Schweiger finished second to get the other NHC seat.

On Sunday, the $140 Bet and Set SFBC Qualifier had 47 entries and gave away a $3,500 SFBC seat to the winner, David Browning, who won in a runaway thanks to two big longshot hits in Races 7 and 10. Robert Schneider got a nice consolation of $1,200 for finishing second.

On Monday, the $1,000 KDBC/BCBC Qualifier had 82 entries and gave away 2 KDBC seats and 2 BCBC seats to go along with $11,000 in cash prizes. Brian OKane hit a huge win bet in the final race to take the win for a BCBC seat and $6,600 cash. William Traintafel finished second to take the other BCBC seat and $2,200 cash.

The two KDBC seats went to Frank Paros and Marshall Gramm for finishing third and fourth respectively. 

Upcoming Tournaments

The second season of the TwinSpires Tour kicked off last weekend as well with five eligible tournaments. Matt Miller got off to a hot start with his double top three finish in the NHC qualifier and has a nice early lead. But that was only about 2% of the eligible tournaments this year and your top 25 scores count so there is plenty of time to join in!

This weekend highlights two SFBC qualifiers at Churchill Downs! On Saturday, we have a live money $600 SFBC Qualifier. On Sunday, we have a $140 Bet and Set SFBC Qualifier.

Feeder Tournaments: Low buy-in contests designed as satellite qualifiers. The primary prize is a winning entry into a larger, higher-stakes tournament.

What are the rules of horse racing tournaments?

1. Bankroll Formats

Mythical Bankroll: Players use a simulated, fictitious budget to place bets. No real money is risked beyond the initial tournament entry fee.

Live Bankroll: Players use real money to establish their tournament bankroll. Real wagers are placed on the tracks, and players keep their remaining bankroll alongside any winnings.

2. Race Selection Formats

Mandatory Races: The tournament organizers select specific races, and every participant must place a wager on those exact events.

Optional Races: Players are given a roster of eligible races and have the freedom to choose which ones to play to meet the required total race count.

3. Wager Restrictions

Most contests limit participants to specific, standard bet types (typically Win, Place, or Show) to ensure fair competition.

4. Selection Deadlines

Pick and Pray Contests: All selections for every race in the tournament must be locked in before the post time of the first race of the day. No changes can be made once the tournament begins.
