How to Bet the 2019 Spinaway Stakes

August 31st, 2019

An exciting field of seven juvenile fillies will contest Sunday’s $350,000 Spinaway Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. The seven-furlong feature is a loaded affair with some superb prospects for both the short and long term, including four fillies by standout sire Into Mischief. ANALYSIS Mundaye Call (#1) (10-1) from the rail showed big gate speed on debut and is likely to do the same on Sunday. The expensive filly will get some pressure from debut winners Figure of Speech (#5) (4-1) and Risky Mischief (#6) (6-1), with Shippy (#7) (9-2) in close attendance, as well. Perfect Alibi (#3) (7-2) and Frank’s Rockette (#2) (8-5), the one-two finishers of the recent Adirondack Stakes (G2), will be ready to pounce at the top of the stretch. Miss Peppina (#4) (15-1) will take back early in hopes of rallying into a total pace meltdown. WAGERS $3 Exacta Box 1,2,5 = $18 $2 Trifecta Box 1,2,5 = $12 MUNDAYE CALL (#1) (10-1) – $950,000 yearling purchase had a clear edge in the stretch on debut before falling just short at the wire. Into Mischief filly shows a nice five-furlong morning drill in the interim, and the Kentucky-bred might be the speed of the speed in the affair. Tyler Gaffalione will be in the silks. FRANK’S ROCKETTE (#2) (8-5) – Bill Mott pupil aired at first asking at Churchill Downs prior to posting a runner-up finish in the Adirondack last time out. The daughter of Into Mischief had some trouble in her stakes debut, but a clear voyage on Sunday could lead this fine prospect to the winners’ circle. Julien Leparoux retains the mount. PERFECT ALIBI (#3) (7-2) – Grade 2 vixen has done little wrong from a trio of lifetime attempts for Mark Casse. Sky Mesa filly aced her first Saratoga test with a smart late rally, and she could sit off of a wicked early tempo on this occasion. The April foal will be running late with Irad Ortiz Jr. signed on. MISS PEPPINA (#4) (15-1) – Gary Gullo charge was a closing fourth in the Adirondack and runs on Lasix for the initial time in the Spinaway. Chestnut filly by Bayern has a sharp turn of foot, and she lands in a field where the pace could be a frenetic one. Florida-bred will try to pass them all late under Joel Rosario. FIGURE OF SPEECH (#5) (4-1) – Debut winner looked the part when drawing off on debut for conditioner Chad Brown. The Into Mischief filly draws well and she might sit a dream trip pressing dueling leaders. Bay lass has posted a pair of solid five-furlong drills in the interim, and the Kentucky-bred will be a major player with even slight improvement in the Spinaway. RISKY MISCHIEF (#6) (6-1) – New York-bred was bet to 3-5 odds at first asking and showed why with a dominant showing on the course. The daughter of Into Mischief led throughout while never challenged, and she could be almost any kind. $350,000 yearling buy entices Jose Ortiz to retain the mount, which is a positive sign. SHIPPY (#7) (9-2) – Midshipman filly has impressed from two lifetime outings to date, including a narrow third-place finish in the Schuylerville Stakes (G3) at Saratoga. March foal will make her first attempt since joining the barn of Kathy Ritvo, and drawing outside in a field of lightly raced horses will be beneficial to the contender. Dark bay will be stalking the pace with Luis Saez aboard. PHOTO: Perfect Alibi  (c) Coady Photography/Churchill Downs
