How to bet the 2025 Eddie Read Stakes

July 25th, 2025

The Sunday feature at Del Mar is the $250,000 Eddie Read S. (G2), which will see eight go postward. The 1 1/8-mile grassy tilt attracted a total of six graded stakes winners, while seven of the eight in the field have been victorious on the Del Mar lawn in the past, as well.

Eddie Read Wagers

  • $12 win and place #6 Stay Hot ($24)
  • $1 superfecta 6 with 3,4 with 3,4 all ($10)
  • $1 superfecta 6 with 3,4 with all with 3,4 ($10)

The Peter Eurton-trained #6 Stay Hot is simply a really nice horse who is consistently good, and the five-time stakes victor gets the nod on this occasion. The Summer Front four-year-old was first or second in six of eight tries as a sophomore and kicked off 2025 with a game score in the Texas Turf Classic S. at Lone Star Park last time out.

Stay Hot owns a pair of wins and a second from four career appearances at Del Mar and is also proven at the distance, as well. Tactical Kentucky-bred has an edge on many of his major foes in the field due to his ability to lay close in the early going, and I expect him to inch to the front in the early stretch en route to a victory with Antonio Fresu taking the reins.

Two-time Grade 1 winner #4 Formidable Man is the one to beat for Michael McCarthy. The City of Light four-year-old is not just a classy sort, but the colt is also an unblemished four-for-four on the Del Mar sod and comes off of a huge pair of runs at one mile against top company as of late. Bay colt is three-for-five at the distance, and he is impossible to ignore with Umberto Rispoli guiding the stout Kentucky-bred.

The John Shirreffs-trained #3 Atitlan, who owns three graded wins, might prefer a bit more ground to be at his best, but remains a contender, nonetheless, at nine furlongs. The bay son of The Factor was a fast-closing fifth while defeated by just 1 1/2 lengths in the Shoemaker Mile (G1) in his latest appearance and will move forward off of that one. The talented colt possesses a big turn of foot and will have fine turf pilot Hector Berrios in the silks.

I feel that each horse in the group can finish in the money, so I will be using the β€˜all’ button in my vertical plays
