Los Alamitos: How to bet the 2025 Great Lady M Stakes

A compact but stacked field of six fillies and mares will travel 6 ½ panels in Saturday’s $200,000 Great Lady M. S. (G2) at Los Alamitos. The affair features streaking multiple Grade 1 heroine #6 Kopion (4-5) and defending champ #2 Sweet Azteca (9-5) in what looks like a major showdown in the filly and mare sprint division.
Great Lady M Wagers
- $30 trifecta 6 with 2 with 4 ($30)
- $2 trifecta 6 with 4 with all ($8)
- $1 trifecta box 2,4,6 ($6)
Trained by Richard Mandella, Kopion is five-for-five in one-turn tilts in her career and comes off a scintillating performance in the Derby City Distaff (G1) at Churchill Downs on May 3 when decimating a top-caliber crew over seven-eighths. The daughter of Omaha Beach has registered triple digit Brisnet Speed numbers in a trio of races in succession and is simply impossible to go against in her current form cycle. Spendthrift color bearer will have Kaz Kimura in the silks.
Sweet Azteca will make her first run dating back to October and also her initial attempt since moving to the barn of Richard Baltas. The five-year-old ran arguably her best race to date when winning this race for fun in 2024 and earning a 106 Brisnet Speed number in the process. Kentucky-bred mare is the inside speed of the field, but I am a bit concerned that her conditioner stated that she is not fully fit for the dash. She will be a major factor on pure talent, nonetheless, with Juan Hernandez riding the lightly raced gray.
Michael McCarthy’s #4 Barbara T (20-1) has a lot of upside with just a trio of races to her credit, led by wins in two straight in advance of Saturday. The Army Mule four-year-old has displayed good early speed as well as a nice turn of foot as of late, and while the top pair in the field are well ahead of her right now, she can be a factor if one of the duo fails to fire. She has raced just once in 2025 and can’t be ignored at a huge price with Hector Berrios taking the reins.
