How to bet the 2025 Penn Mile Stakes

June 26th, 2025

A talented field of seven sophomores will travel one mile on the Penn National lawn in Friday’s $400,000 Penn Mile S. (G3) at Penn National Racecourse. The race will go through the once-beaten #7 Zulu Kingdom (7-5) for conditioner Chad Brown. By Ten Sovereigns, the bay was a debut winner overseas prior to arriving in the U. S. and has won four of his five stateside outings in advance of Friday.

Penn Mile Wagers

  • $4 trifecta key 7 with 1,4,5 ($24)
  • 50-cent trifecta box 1,4,5,7 ($12)
  • 10-cent superfecta 4,5,7 with 1,4,5,7 with 1,4,5,7 with all ($9)

Zulu Kingdom captured the With Anticipation S. (G3) and Pilgrim S. (G2) prior to concluding his two-year-old season with a decent seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), and he has been sharp from two races in 2025, as well. The Irish-bred rallied to take the Columbia S. at Tampa Bay Downs in his season bow, which preceded a score in the deep American Turf (G1) beneath the Twin Spires on Kentucky Derby Day. He’s not the flashiest of horses, but the sophomore has a nose for the wire and is a must-use with Flavien Prat coming in for the voyage.

Four-time stakes winner #4 Mi Bago (7-2) was a brave fourth in an excellent 14-horse field in the American Turf S. (G1) at Churchill Downs two back prior to finishing a clear second in the off-the-turf Pennine Ridge S. at Saratoga in his latest venture. Trained by Mark Casse, the son of Vekoma, has ample early speed and will be sent from the opening bell by Irad. He could win if left unopposed early on.

The wildcard in the group is #5 Out On Bail (6-1), who will make his route debut in this spot. The gray son of Tiz the Law has been first or second in each of his five lifetime runs on the lawn and is bred to handle the move to eight panels, too. Conditioned by Mike Maker, the New York-bred colt was a clear second in the William Walker S. at Churchill Downs in his three-year-old unveiling and makes sense at a fair price with Manny Franco riding.

#1 States’ Rights (8-1) was unlucky not to have won at Keeneland most recently and has shown steady progression throughout his career for Cherie DeVaux. While I see the Constitution colt as more likely for the exotics, he’s not without a winning chance as a strong late runner in a field with numerous early types signed on. The dark bay colt will be dangerous with a move forward beneath Jose Ortiz.
