A talented and accomplished field of nine will travel 1 1/8 miles over the Tapeta in Saturday’s $175,000 Ontario Derby (G3) at Woodbine. Seven of the nine in the cast have endured prior success in the stakes ranks in what is a fine rendition of the event.
Ontario Derby Wagers
The lightly raced #8 Chaos Agent is three-for-four in his lifetime and comes off a game score in the grassy Toronto Cup last time out, going one mile on the local green. Trained by Josie Carroll, the $350,000 son of Independence Hall gets back on the all-weather, where he is a two-time winner, and the move to nine panels seems to be well within his scope, too. The Kentucky-bred colt comes in fresh, with five morning moves on this surface as of late, and the versatile sort will be closer to the pace than he was last time, with Rafael Hernandez retaining the ride atop the Pin Oak color bearer.
Mark Casse’s #9 Military Time was second in the King’s Plate on the oval and was last seen gamely taking the Prince of Wales S. on the dirt at Fort Erie. The chestnut son of Gun Runner has never finished out of the money from six career runs on the course, and the colt drilled a bullet five-eighths here in preparation for Saturday. He does his best work from off the pace, and the Ontario-bred could be moving best of all in the stretch with Fraser Aebly in the silks once again.
#5 Teleport, in search of his initial black-type tally, has good tactical speed in a field lacking pace, and will also have the blinkers back on for this engagement. One of two in the field for trainer Kevin Attard, the chestnut son of super sire Lope de Vega has been fairly consistent in his lifetime in advance of his second lifetime run on the synthetic today. The Irish-bred gelding keeps Pietro Moran on board and will be forcing the tempo soon after the break with a clean break from the gate.
