Eight fillies and mares will travel 9 furlongs on the Del Mar turf course in Saturday’s $150,000 John C. Mabee (G2).
John C. Mabee Analysis
#8 Raymunods Secret could control things from the start with a clean break from the outside post. She will be the one to catch and beat.
John C. Mabee Contenders
#1 CATCH THE EYE -- Hoffmans trainee has never hit the board in four prior tries on the Del Mar turf. Quality Road filly ran her best race to date going 1 3/8 miles last time out, but I will need to see her repeat that performance before siding with her.
#2 LADY PRANCEALOT -- Grade 1 queen is the class of the field and looms large for Baltas. Late runner was a close fourth in the Yellow Ribbon (G2) most recently and will get a bit more ground to work with on Saturday. 4-year-old will be making one run from the back beneath Rispoli.
#3 DON’T BLAME JUDY -- Blame mare shows just one win in her last 17 outings and is hard to back on top in the affair. The exotics threat was a solid third in the Osunitas S. on the course two prior, and she will be a top-three factor with any improvement off of that showing. Drayden Van Dyke has the assignment.
#4 PULPIT RIDER -- Daughter of Lucky Pulpit got up late to post an upset in the Solana Beach S. over a nice field in preparation of the Mabee. Mike Puype charge likes the Del Mar green, but she rises in class to face open foes on Saturday and will need a step forward to challenge this cast inside the final furlong.
#5 ZEE DROP -- First of two from the D’Amato barn was a decent fourth in a local allowance tilt last time out and could move forward in her third start of the season. Lemon Drop Kid filly is a winner on the course and is not without a chance for a top-three finish with Abel Cedillo riding.
#6 MEAL TICKET -- Chew pupil was fifth in the race last year against much tougher and has some appeal at a generous price. Dark bay daughter of Malibu Moon is a two-time winner on the oval, and while her current form is not superb, she did show some life with the blinkers back on last time. She will be included in my vertical plays.
#7 QUICK -- Bay from the Sadler shedrow owns a win and a second from a pair of local assignments in preparation of her graded stakes debut. Olympic Glory 4-year-old has hit the board in seven straight assignments, and she will be a threat if she keeps in touch in the early going. Valdivia will be in the controls.
#8 RAYMUNDOS SECRET -- Top pick has a pace edge on the major contenders in the field and gets the nopd to lead the cast at every call. Treasure Beach 4-year-old was a game winner at Del Mar in her 2020 debut, and the filly will improve second time off the shelf. Top pilot Flavien Prat will guide the selection.
