How to bet the Pick 6 on June 30 at Churchill Downs

June 30th, 2017

It’s closing night at Churchill Downs, which means everything must go in the carryover pools: the $3,375 Super High 5 on the 11th (last) race and the $146,754 Single (Pick 6) jackpot, which isn’t a jackpot on the final day of the spring-summer meeting.

The Pick 6 begins in race 5 and is a tricky sequence that includes a pair of two-year-old stakes races and an overnight stakes for older male sprinters that ends the bet. The super high 5 11th race is not part of the Pick 6.

For me, I’ll pin my hopes on the juvenile stakes races, using only #5  Bullet in the Bashford Manor and a trio of fillies in the Debutante: #6 She’s a Julie, #9 Amberspatriot, and #13 Waki Patriot.

Things begin with a competitive $16,000 claiming race for older horses going 7 furlongs, and the wager can open up immediately as #8 Spicoli and #5 High Multiple both merit big chances on my grid (see below).

Leg 3 (race 7) is similarly competitive with #4 Makeamericagreat the top pick with a 6-to-1 morning line and #5 Huntin Buddy in the “A” column with a 20-to-1 projected odds.

Things close out with the Kelly’s Landing, and a lot of people will hope to get there to one of the bigger favorites of the night in #4 Limousine Liberal, but I like the aforementioned Copper Bullet a lot better as a single to lean on, and I’m hoping that opinion helps me get live to my top longshot of the night, #1 Mabel, who has the best last-out Brisnet.com Speed Rating in here and is ideally drawn on the rail.

Here’s my grid:

WAGERING STRATEGY: An all “A” ticket would cost $144, which is a spend I’m comfortable with, so we’ll do it. 1, 2, 5, 8, 12 with 5 with 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 11 with 6, 9, 13 with 3, 4 with 1, 4, 5, 11
