How to bet the Rancho Bernardo Stakes

A cast of six will speed 6 1/2 furlongs on the Del Mar dirt in Sunday’s $100,000 Rancho Bernardo (G3). The race marks the 11th lifetime appearance for the fantastic #5 Sweet Azteca, who will be a prohibitive choice at post time in the heat for conditioner Richard Baltas. A six-year-old by Sharp Azteca, the Kentucky-bred has battled through some injuries in her career, but when she is healthy, the mare can be sensational.

The gray has won this race in two straight seasons by open lengths and also commenced her 2026 season with a measured score in the Great Lady M (G2) at Los Alamitos to win that sprint for the third consecutive year. Sweet Azteca has huge early speed, but she doesn’t need to be on the front end to fire her best shot, and the lass figures to get an ideal trip pressing the pace from the break prior to taking over turning for home on Sunday. She has posted four strong morning moves on the surface in advance of the heat and is the clear top choice, with Juan Hernandez in the silks. 

I’m willing to give #3 Antifona another chance in her second lifetime try on the main oval. Trained by Vladimir Cerin, the bay mare was outrun in the Desert Stormer S. at Santa Anita last time while making her dirt debut, but she did have a bit of trouble on the day and has trained well in the interim. The stakes-placed bay drilled a nice five-eighths on the course leading up to this tilt and could add value to the exacta from off the pace with Kent Desormeaux inheriting the ride. 

#1 Thermal is the logical main danger to the top choice for John Sadler. The five-year-old daughter of Nyquist earned a hefty 104 Brisnet Speed rating for her work in a stakes romp at Lone Star Park most recently and could get brave if she gets some separation from the favorite early in this dash. She has captured three of her last four since focusing on the dirt since October, and her best race will give her a chance if the top pick fails to fire, but I fear that she will be put away by Sweet Azteca turning for home and could get leg-weary in the lane.
