Indiana Grand: Track Update & Standings for July 7

July 5th, 2021

Wednesday, July 7 is Indiana Derby (G3) day, the flagship day on the Indiana Grand racing calendar. Wednesday's card features six two-turn stakes races across ages and surfaces, its highest-powered card of the season. In advance of that, let's check in on the trends in Shelbyville!

Jockeys

Jockey Marcelino Pedroza is romping in the jockey standings, with 41 wins (41-for-227, 18%), 13 clear of second-place Joseph Ramos (28-for-177, 16%). Though Pedroza's win percentage is almost identical to last year, he already had almost as many mounts as he did there in 2020; last year his win percentage was commensurate with the leading riders, but he had less than half the rides.

Though Pedroza and Deshawn Parker lead the jockey colony in turf wins, with eight and seven respectively, they both have negative flat-bet ROIs on grass. The next two jockeys in the table of turf winners have been getting enough price horses across the wire to excite horseplayers. Samuel Bermudez (6-for-30, 20%) has a +134% flat-bet ROI across turf starts, and Edgar Morales (4-for-19, 21%) has a +46% turf ROI. On the dirt, Rodney Prescott is getting it done for a price. He is 19-for-112 (17%) on the main, but is still getting away at a price enough to have a +50% ROI on dirt.

Trainers

Randy Klopp leads all trainers with 26 wins (26-for-130, 20%), six clear of Genaro Garcia (20-for-106, 19%).

Looking specifically at turf races, Anthony Granitz is burnishing his reputation as a strong turf trainer. He has six grass wins (6-for-17, 35%), twice as many turf wins as his closest competitor Rey Hernandez. And, despite being a longtime force on the Indiana turf, Granitz's winners are good for an astounding +256% ROI on the lawn. On dirt, though Klopp (26-for-119, 22%) leads the way in the win column, the barn piquing the bettors' interest is Marvin Johnson. His 14 dirt wins (14-for-86, 18%) tie him for third among trainers, and his +83% ROI is a bettor's delight.
