Isabella Sings posts front-running Mrs. Revere upset

After establishing uncontested opening fractions of :23.50, :48.07 and 1:13.41, Isabella Sings reached the mile mark in 1:38.30, leading by 2 ½ lengths with only a sixteenth of a mile remaining. However, Rainha Da Bateria, a 44-1 outsider, made it interesting when rallying into the frame late as the pacesetter began to noticeably tire, but Isabella Sings managed to save the victory by a half-length.
The winner completed the 1 1/16-mile turf test for 3-year-old fillies in 1:44.74 over a course rated “good.”
Isabella Sings returned $2 win-place-show payouts of $56.60, $28.60 and $15.80 and keyed the $1,799.20 exacta ($2) with Rainha Da Bateria, who totaled $30.60 to place and $14.80 to show.
It was another 3 ¾ lengths back to third-placer Devine Aida, the 6-1 fourth choice among 14 runners, and Season Ticket rounded out a $63,817.40 superfecta ($1) at 49-1 odds.
Next under the wire came 3-1 second choice Partisan Politics, Tammy the Torpedo, Bobbi Grace, Return to Grace, 2-1 favorite Onus, Celestine, Cara Marie, Robillard, Prado’s Sweet Ride and Kathballu. Darling Sky was scratched and America Mon Amie, Urtheoneeyelove and Wiener Valkyrie all failed to draw in from the also-eligible list.
A debut winner on Belmont Park’s turf in the summer of 2014, Isabella Sings finished a neck second in the Natalma (G2) at Woodbine in her second start. She concluded last year with a 12th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and opened 2015 with an allowance/optional claiming victory at Gulfstream Park in late February, but chestnut miss dropped her next three outings before returning to the winner’s circle in the July 26 Little Silver at Monmouth Park.
She followed with a nose second in the September 5 Boiling Springs (G3) at Monmouth but was overlooked on Saturday after recording a well-beaten fourth in the October 12 Pebbles at Belmont. Isabella Sings rebounded with a career-best and has now earned $303,950 from an 11-4-3-0 career record.
Bred in Kentucky, Isabella Sings is out of the Lomitas mare Isobel Baillie, who was stakes-placed in France and is also the dam of multiple stakes queen Alaura Michele. This is a high-class female family, with 1980 champion older mare Glorious Song, producer of notables Singspiel and Rahy, serving as the fourth maternal dam.

TODD PLETCHER (via telephone): “She can be kind of a headstrong filly and Paco was able to kind of coax her along a bit and get her to settle. The first quarter was solid, but then they were able to talk her out of it and get a kind second quarter. It looked like it was game on from there. I was hoping she could continue on. She had been training really well and coming into it in good shape and we felt like she had a fighting chance in what appeared to be a deep and competitive field.
“She’ll get a break at Siena Farm. She’ll go over there and get a bit of a freshening, which we already had planned win, lose or draw. She’ll get a little bit of a break and she’s the kind of filly that should get better as a 4-year-old. She’s put together a few solid races this year and with her pedigree she should have hopefully her best year next year.”
PACO LOPEZ: “Today she was very relaxed and she finished really well. This filly is a nice filly.”
NACHO PATINO, co-owner of ISABELLA SINGS: “I was watching the times because I think if she can do :23, :24 and maybe :47 and :48, and when I saw the half in :48 and 1:13, I thought, ‘Ah, they might not catch her now,’ because she’s got the speed to finish up. It’s just as long as she gets a little bit of a breather, she likes to run in front. So when I saw the times, I thought we had a good chance. I was thinking they were going to push her but it seemed like they just let her settle down, I was happy just looking at the times.”
GRAHAM MOTION (via telephone), trainer of RAINHA DA BATERI: “I think she’s improving. She’s finally putting it together. Although she won a stake last year, I think she’s been a little unlucky this year and she keeps improving. Even in her last race (fourth in Laurel’s Commonwealth Oaks) at Laurel I thought she was very unlucky. She just has not been a filly that gets a good trip.”
ROBBY ALBARADO, jockey on RAINHA DA BETERIA: “I had an unbelievable trip. All of the horses I had to go through – she was way back there. I did think I gave myself or her a fair chance if I had to go around horses, so I tried to save as much ground as possible. And we did and ended up with a beautiful trip. Graham (Motion) said she’s been getting some trouble trips and deserved better. She ran big.”
JOE BRAVO, rider of DEVINE AIDA: “She settled good. She doesn’t have a big turn-of-foot, but she kept getting to ‘em. She’s got a big future.”
