Jockey David Romero Flores Still Rides Strong

January 28th, 2017

Legendary jockey David Flores is back from Singapore.  He's currently riding at the Fairgrounds. Flores left the United States to run on the Singapore Racing Circuit where purses are gigantic. Since returning, he's done well. His mounts earned over $1.18 million in 2016. So far in 2017, Flores's record is 8-6-5 from 34 mounts. His mounts have won $227,280. That's a nice start to 2017. See below for five of David R. Flores's most memorable rides.

Zenyatta, 2008 El Encino Stakes

Flores was terrific aboard the great Zenyatta in a short field to win the 2008 El Encino Stakes. He rode Zenyatta perfectly, and one of the greatest race horses to ever live did go off at 6/5 in the race. But, Romance is Diane went off at 5/2 and Tough Tiz's Sis went off at 3/1. The El Encino wasn't a slam dunk on paper. Once David told her to go, as she always did, Zenyatta went!

Tempera, 2001 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

There were some seriously talented horses in the 2001 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies, including Bella Bellucci, Imperial Gesture, and Take Charge Lady. I remember this race well because I had Tempera and Tiznow keyed in my Pick 4. Flores was so patient on Tempera in this race. David's ride was an absolute thing of beauty.

Honor in War, 2003 G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic

I remember this ride by Flores for a couple of reasons. First, he knew that he had to get the jump on Perfect Drift. That's exactly what  he did. Second, the great Luke Kryuytbosch, who passed away too soon, called the race. Check out how David, once again, waited until the optimal time to get Honor in War going. Then, he patiently drove Honor in War past Patrol. Another fantastic ride by one of the great unsung jockeys in thoroughbred racing.

Action This Day, 2003 Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Flores brought Action This Day home first in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at 27 to 1 odds. Action This Day, trained by Richard Mandell, never developed into the three-year-old that so many racing fans thought he might. Still, Action This Day beat a decent field in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. No matter what you think of the horse, you have to appreciates David's ride, where instead of taking Action This Day 5 or 6 wide, he guided him in between two other horses to save as much ground as he could around the final turn. That's what I call race riding!

Singletary, 2004 Breeders' Cup Mile

Singletary is easily one of the top racehorses that David Flores has ever ridden. Once again, Flores made the perfect move aboard a horse to get the win. Singletary, named after legendary NFL Chicago Bear linebacker Mike Singletary, failed in two straight BC Miles after his win in 2004. But on that day in 2004, he was the best versus a field that included the terrific Artie Schiller and the highly regarded Six Perfections. Why Singletary was best in the 2004 Breeders' Cup Mile has a lot to do with the way David Romero Flores' rode him.
