June 27 stakes plays for Lone Star Park

June 27th, 2021

A quartet of stakes races on the green will close out a fine 11-race card at Lone Star Park on Sunday.

Race 8 -- Grand Prairie Turf Sprint S.

This five-furlong dash attracted just six, with two from the Steve Asmussen barn among them. I will side elsewhere and tab #6 Quarky (3-1) for the score.

The five-year-old by The Factor has an ideal post, and figures to move forward in his second run off the claim for Karl Broberg. Reylu Gutierrez has the assignment.

Race 9 -- Wasted Tears S.

Fillies and mares will travel 1 1/16 miles in a tricky handicapping puzzle. #1 Brandons Babe (5-1) has won or placed in nine of 10 lifetime tries on the lawn, and she ran well in her lone prior stakes attempt.

The chestnut by Fed Biz should save ground throughout before firing in the stretch for Karen Jacks.

Race 10 -- Chicken Fried S.

A well-matched field of eight fillies and mares will vie in a five-furlong test.

Mike Maker’s #7 A Bit of Both (5-1) was outrun against a stout field at Churchill Downs most recently, but she comes in fresh and is a fine fit for this cast. The bay daughter of Paynter has a lot of versatility, and she will be ready to fire her best shot with six morning drills in preparation for Sunday. David Cabrera will guide the stalker.

Race 11 -- Singletary S.

The boys will run nine panels in the finale. It’s never easy to claim one off Maker and enjoy immediate success, but I think that Ron Moquett’s #4 Artie’s Rumor (5-1) rates a big chance in his first for the barn. The Iowa-bred gelding has 10 lifetime tallies on the green, and was sharp in a recent claiming event at Churchill Downs last time out. The bay has the tactical foot to always be in range beneath Cabrera.

I will play that one on top of Maker’s #2 Me and Mr. C (5-2) in the exacta. The Florida-bred son of Khozan is a stakes winner at the distance, and I like the prep race he had for Sunday when a late fourth at Gulfstream Park going one mile. The morning-line choice will be coming on in the lane.
