G2 Elkhorn for 4&Up going 1-1/2 mi (T)
Closing day at Keeneland for the Spring meet with the feature the Grade 2 Elkhorn for older horses going 12 furlongs on the turf. The morning line favorite, but certainly not a slam dunk, is TEMERAINE for Niall Racing and Tom Proctor. TEMERAINE's last win came in the Grade 3 Kentucky Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs five starts back. He is making his third start off the layoff, but in this wide open field, it's best to bet against the favorite. One thing this race does not lack is pace. There are plenty of horses that like to run up front, which gives the long shot HANGOVER KID a look. The son of Lemon Drop Kid has finished first, second or third in 10 of his 14 career starts on turf including a third in the Grade 1 United Nations last July at Monmouth Park. HANGOVER KID will be doing his best running late and picks up one of Keeneland's best turf riders in Julien Leparoux. Must use in any trifecta or superfecta wager. Trainer Chris Block won a turf race on Thursday and he starts SUNTRACER in the Elkhorn. SUNTRACER finished just over a length behind TEMERAINE in the Kentucky Turf Cup and is another late-running horse. Not sure what to make of UNITARIAN. He won back-to-back turf allowances this winter at Gulfstream Park then finished a non-threatening seventh in the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap in late February. Freshened since, Pletcher calls upon Javier Castellano, who was aboard those two wins. Drawn well in post three and with some tactical speed, he could be the first to pounce turning for home. Perhaps, if you are diving into the pick-4 wager, an "all" is the best way to go.
