Keeneland Spot Plays Oct. 2, 2026

An exciting month of racing at Keeneland begins Friday, albeit with an unfortunate forecast of rain for the opening card. With that in mind, here are a couple of horses I’ll be taking a look at during the course of the afternoon.

Race 4: Maiden, 2:36 p.m. ET

#3 Cartier Gold (12-1) enters this Beard Course test having not run since Dec. 5, but that was an encouraging two-turn debut at Turfway for the daughter of Gift Box. In a congested field of 12, she finished a clear second-best to Queenstown, who last April dominated allowance foes over the Keeneland strip.

While the layoff is not ideal, Cartier Gold logically has room to improve and perhaps will take kindly to a wet track, should those conditions arise. A useful Turfway work pattern for John Servis is also a positive sign for the close relation to multiple graded stakes winner Tawny Port.

Race 8: Jessamine (G2), 4:44 p.m. ET

Perhaps the one race assured of staying on the grass if the rains arrive, given it’s a Breeders’ Cup prep. And a large share of bettors are sure to be wary of the Horseshoe Indianapolis running line of #10 Serenas Ghost (10-1), even though her sub-1:35 mile was a solid enough performance for a two-year-old at first asking.

Showing alert positional speed from the start, Serenas Ghost saved ground, split rivals in upper stretch, and kicked on nicely for a largely unexpected 12-1 score. Serenas Ghost obviously faces a far more imposing cast here and on relatively short rest, but she remains with upside going into just her second start, and the projected market leaders don’t own any imposing figures.
