Kentucky Derby BRIS Speed Rating Report March 29: Hence gets big number

Hence powered his way to a 3 ¾-length upset in the Sunland Derby (G3), rallying last-to-first at 10-1 odds, and earned a 103 BRIS Speed rating that towers over previous numbers. He received a perfect set-up behind a sizzling early pace and the surprising performance leaves us wondering whether he’s for real.
The Street Boss colt posted back-to-back 86 figures in his first two outings at Oaklawn Park this year, a pair of starts that inspired little confidence for the Sunland Derby. The Steve Asmussen trainee nearly surrendered a large lead before hanging on in a January 16 maiden tally and finished a well-beaten seventh making his stakes debut in the February 20 Southwest (G3).
Hence appeared much-improved in the Sunland Derby but the question remains whether he can back it up next time. Asmussen is considering one more start before the Kentucky Derby.
Fast and Accurate is scheduled to be supplemented for a $200,000 fee after punching his Kentucky Derby ticket with a Spiral (G3) victory but will face an extremely daunting challenge at Churchill Downs. The gray son of Hansen registered only an 86 BRIS Speed rating taking the Spiral on Polytrack, a number so low it doesn’t merit inclusion in our weekly Speed rating list (90 minimum), and he’s never won on dirt. Look for him to return to turf afterward.
A Group 1-winning juvenile on turf, Thunder Snow continued to show his versatility winning the UAE Derby (G2) and guaranteed himself a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate with the 100-point prize. However, we don’t calculate Speed rating for Dubai races so Thunder Snow isn’t listed below.
