Kentucky Derby Dream Bet Fountain of Youth Stakes pick from Jennifer Caldwell

February 26th, 2016

There are two “Awesome” colts in Saturday’s Fountain of Youth S. (G2) and it’s hard to pick between them for the TwinSpires.com’s $25,000 Kentucky Derby Dream Bet contest.

Both Awesome Speed (#4, 4-1) and Awesome Banner (#5, 7-2) own the credentials to provide a nice upset of Mohaymen in the 1 1/16-mile contest, and each offers up decent odds to boot.

However, I’m tabbing the latter in his two-turn debut to take home the top prize.

Awesome Banner is looking to keep his mark perfect after going three-for-three thus far in his career. The Stanley Gold-trained son of Awesome of Course broke his maiden at Gulfstream by 9 3/4 lengths last June, then wasn’t seen in competition again until showing up for his stakes, and three-year-old, debut in the January 2 Hutcheson (G2) over the same track.

Awesome Banner once again led all the way home for a 4 3/4-length victory, and it was déjà vu all over again 28 days later in the Swale (G2) when he romped by five lengths.

The bay colt will be stretching out past seven furlongs for the first time in the Fountain of Youth but hasn’t shown any signs of stopping so far. He recorded increasing BRIS Speed ratings of 97, 98 and 99 in his three starts thus far.

Awesome Banner could wire this group under jockey Jose Caraballo for owner/breeder Jacks or Better Farm.
