Kentucky Derby Dream Bet Tampa Bay Derby and San Felipe Stakes picks from Jennifer Caldwell

There are two opportunities on Saturday for those taking part in TwinSpires.com’s $25,000 Kentucky Derby Dream Bet contest to get a winner.

First up is the Tampa Bay Derby (G2), which features a field of 10 going 1 1/16 miles. About a half-hour later, a field of seven was entered to go the same distance in the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita Park.

Destin (#7, 9-2) has already proven himself at Tampa Bay Downs and could very well earn his second straight graded victory at the track. The Giant’s Causeway colt made his second start of the year in the Sam F. Davis (G3) on February 13 and pulled off to a 2 1/4-length score for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Destin earned a career-best BRIS Speed rating of 100 for that effort and looks to establish his credentials for a Kentucky Derby (G1) berth in the Tampa Bay Derby, which offers 50 points to the winner. Javier Castellano piloted Destin in his initial two starts and returns to the saddle aboard the gray colt for this contest.

The San Felipe is a bit tougher to pick, with the top three from the Robert B. Lewis (G3) showing up, the romping California Derby winner and Grade 2 victor Exaggerator, who ran second last out to undefeated champion Nyquist.

However, Mor Spirit (#3, 2-1) appears ready for a third consecutive score under jockey Gary Stevens in this spot.

The Bob Baffert-trained ridgling closed out his juvenile campaign with a nice win in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) on December 19 and returned February 6 to take the Lewis by 1 1/2 lengths. The dark bay son of Eskendereya can win from off the pace or near the lead, and is 2-1-0 from three starts at Santa Anita thus far in his career.

Mor Spirit earned a nice 99 BRIS Speed rating for his Lewis triumph, but more impressively posted a 108 BRIS Late Pace figure for the race. The talented colt has been working up a storm at Santa Anita to ready for this one and could hand Baffert a record sixth win in the San Felipe.
