First up will be the U.A.E. Derby (UAE-G2) scheduled around 9:35 a.m. (ET) at Meydan as part of the Dubai World Cup card. Much later in the day, Fair Grounds hosts the Louisiana Derby (G2) at approximately 6:12 p.m.
The U.A.E. Derby features a field of seven runners, including a pair of fillies, three runners from Japan and one U.S. based contestant. Only three in the field have actually competed at Meydan this season, and that kind of experience could decide the winner on Saturday.
With that in mind, Polar River (#2, 3-5) looks too good to go against despite her morning-line odds of 3-5. The undefeated filly absolutely romped in her initial three starts, all of which came at Meydan beginning in December, then recorded a three-quarter length victory in the U.A.E. Oaks (UAE-G3) over the same track and distance of the U.A.E. Derby.
Polar River will be facing the boys for the first time in Saturday’s Derby, as well as a familiar foe in U.A.E. Oaks runner-up Vale Dori, but has the talent to come out on top yet again.
A contentious field of 11 will line up in the 1 1/8-mile Louisiana Derby and Mo Tom (#6, 5-2) will be looking to put his Risen Star (G2) trip behind him. The Tom Amoss trainee brought a victory in the Lecomte (G3) into that event but was forced to check sharply leaving the far turn and ended up with a cut on his leg.
Despite that Mo Tom managed to rally for third, just 1 1/2 lengths behind returning winner Gun Runner and only a length behind 40-1 longshot and returning runner-up Forevamo. A clean trip under Corey Lanerie could see the dark bay son of Uncle Mo return to the winner’s circle.
