La Canada Stakes - Santa Anita, January 19, 2014

January 19th, 2014

Grade 2 La Canada Santa Anita Sunday, January 19, 2014 Race 8, Post Time 7:05 pm ET

BROKEN SWORD and FIFTYSHADESOFHAY just finished one-two in the Grade 2 Bayakoa at Hollywood Park in December and should be battling for the win on Sunday, but the play could be the long shot SPELLBOUND. SPELLBOUND was an also-ran in the Bayakoa, finishing 12 and one-half lengths behind Broken Sword; however, that was her first in eight months and she is two-for-three over the Santa Anita main track. She is most likely to finish behind the top pair, but may be worth a gamble at double digit odds. BROKEN SWORD made her stakes debut a winning one and it was such jump up that she could bounce off that effort. FIFTYSHADESOFHAY was making her first start off a two month layoff in the Bayakoa and will be a fitter filly on Sunday. She is likely to be closer to the pace after bobbling at the start in that race. Bob Baffert is the trainer of FIFTYSHADESOFHAY and he also sends out ONDINE, who could put pressure on the favorite early, setting it up for FIFTYSHADESOFHAY and SPELLBOUND.
