Late Pick 4 Winsurance play at Fair Grounds on Feb. 13

Kentucky Derby and Oaks preps are among six stakes on Saturday’s 12-race program at Fair Grounds, and TwinSpires players can take advantage of the “Weekend Pick 4 Winsurance” promo.

Customers will get up to 25% of their first Late Pick 4 ticket ($24 minimum) back if it doesn't hit.

Here is how I will play it:

Race 10 – Mineshaft S. (G3) (5:44 p.m. ET)

#4 Maxfield showed improved tactical speed when returning in the Dec. 19 Tenacious S., scoring by 2 1/2 lengths. The unbeaten colt certainly appears formidable for Brendan Walsh, but Maxfield has not registered a triple-digit Brisnet Speed rating from four career starts.

#1 Enforceable enters on the upswing for Mark Casse, posting a sharp allowance score recently, and loves Fair Grounds. He will be included along with the expected pacesetter, last year’s Louisiana Derby (G2) winner #2 Wells Bayou.

Race 11 – Fair Grounds S. (G3)

The 1 1/8-mile stakes is scheduled for turf, but it may be moved to the main track. A storm washed out Thursday’s program, and more rain is in the forecast.

I will buy the 11-horse field, and scratches are expected.

Race 12 – Rachel Alexandra S. (G2)

#8 Travel Column and #1 Clairiere, last seen finishing 1-2 in the Golden Rod S. (G2) at Churchill Downs, are leading Kentucky Oaks contenders. The former must overcome an outside post, and Travel Column has found trouble in both route starts.

I am using both in the Late Pick 4, but Clairiere is my top choice. The price will be better, and Clairiere is eligible to receive a favorable ground-saving stalking trip from her inside post before finishing strongly.

Race 13 – Risen Star S. (G2)

Similar to the Jan. 16 Lecomte S. (G3) at Fair Grounds, the Risen Star may feature moderate early fractions. #2 Proxy is the likely pacesetter, and #6 Midnight Bourbon should be up close to his outside. I expect both to run well.

Midnight Bourbon, who appears much-improved at age 3 for Steve Asmussen, rates a slight edge in my estimation.
