Longshot Winner at Mahoning Valley is Largest Win Payout This Century

December 29th, 2015

R B Wild Promise’s victory on Monday at Mahoning Valley Racecourse was an upset of historic proportions.

Not only did the four-year-old snap a five-race losing streak to give owner Gwendolyn Crosser her first victory as a trainer, but the D’Wildcat gelding did so at odds of 206.6-to-1, making his $415.20 win mutuel the highest such payout this year.

What’s more than that, it’s the highest payout this century, and one of only six North American Thoroughbred winners since 1993 at odds of more than 200-to-1. The last payout at that level happened January 7, 2000, at Mountainneer where West Washington paid $561 to win. Interesting to note that West Washington paid less to show than the 25.7-to-1 third-place finisher!

Crosser, 23, said that she had $5 to win on her gelding--good for a $1,038 return. Incredibly. R B Wild Promise was not even the longest shot in the field of 12, as of the $23,725 bet to win on the seventh race on Monday at Mahoning Valley, $93 (0.392%) of it was on R B Wild Promise--$8 more than was bet to win on Bogey For Blade (0.358%).
