Major Championships This Weekend at Los Alamitos

October 30th, 2015

All eyes will be on Heza Dasha Fire, one of the top older horses in the country, in Saturday night's $859,400 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1).

The winner of nine of his ten lifetime starts, Heza Dasha Fire is already a millionaire, and looked extremely impressive in his trial for the Super Derby. Regular rider Cruz Mendez has guided Heza Dasha Fire to victories in the 2014 Ed Burke Million Futurity and 2015 Golden State Derby.

There will be no show wagering on this feature, and he will likely go into the starting gate as the 1-9 favorite. Other entrants of note are Forget It, Run By You, Take A Look and Texas-bred filly, Tallulah Moon, , will also join the field.

The Super Derby winner will earn a berth to the $600,000 Champion of Champions in December. Moonist, Dashin Brown Streak, Far Niente, and Quirky have already qualified for the prestigious race and the winner of the Bank of America Challenge Championship on Saturday, November 7 at Lone Star Park

Some of the best 2-year-olds in the West will square off Sunday night in the $1,049,350 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos.

Trials were contested on October 18 and Docs Best Card, a Corona Cartel colt owned and trained by Jaime Gomez, set the fastest time, covering 400 yards in :19.770 under Oscar Peinado. His effort was a nice rebound from his ninth-place finish in the October 3 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (G2).

Other contenders include Jess A Pollitician, a son of Apollitical Jess and Little Talks, a Dutch Masters III homebred. Walk Thru Crystal was the tenth fastest qualifier, and has quite an incentive on Sunday. He captured the Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) in June, and should he win the Golden State and the final futurity of the season, the Los Alamitos Two-Million (G1), his connections will earn a $1 million bonus.
