A Brief History of the Acorn Stakes
The Acorn Stakes was first established in 1931 at the legendary Belmont Park. Normally contested at a mile, the Acorn will be contested over 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga in 2024 while Belmont is being refurbished. The race often features the best three-year-old fillies in training and the 2024 edition offers a $500,000 purse.
Several Acorn Stakes winners have gone on to be crowned US champions in that same year, including Cicada (1962), Dark Mirage (1968), Susan’s Girl (1972), Davona Dale (1979), and Pretty Mischievous (2023).
