Meadowlands Offers Solid New Years Eve Card
There were only a pair of harness racing tracks that offered live racing on Saturday night for New Years Eve, but the Meadowlands hosted a program that featured a bevy of stellar performances from aged pacers.
Just before the midway point of the card, Alberto Contador N (Jim Marohn, Jr.) brushed to command before the half in 56.1, rolled by three-quarters in 1:24.3 and drew clear to a four-length score in 1:51.2. The eight-year-old Bettor's Delight gelding trained by Darran Cassar concluded the year with a 5-3-5 slate and $58,000 and took a new seasonal mark in his 2016 finale.
One race later in the $35,000 Invitational for older pacers, City Hall (Brett Miller) continued his newfound winning ways when he rallied from mid pack to score by nearly two lengths in 1:49.2. A six-year-old Metropolitan gelding trained by Amber Buter, City Hall notched his fifth straight score to end the campaign and finished the season with a 12-1-4 slate and $98,000 bankroll from 37 starts. He had regained his winning ways at the Big M by defeating non-winners of $5000 last five starts company and then climbed through his conditions and eventually toppled the Invitational ranks on New Years Eve.

Several races later on the card, Ontario Success (Joe Bongiorno) ended a three-month drought when he gained command past the opener and gained a middle half breather and sprinted clear late to capture a non-winners of $7500 last five starts class in 1:51.2. A six-year-old Lis Mara gelding trained by Ron Burke, Ontario Success notched his 14th win in 25 starts this year and his 28th score from 90 lifetime outings and ended a six-race skid dating back to an Invitational tally at Hoosier Park in September.
Then several races later in the penultimate race on the New Years Eve card, Alexie Mattosie (Brett Miller) overcame post 10 to capture another non-winners of $7500 last five starts class in 1:50.3 as the 2-5 favorite. A durable and classy 10-year-old No Pan Intended gelding trained by Nikolas Drennan, Alexie Mattosie ended his 2016 campaign with a 6-4-4 slate and $45,000 bankroll from 26 starts and he now owns a commendable 44-26-22 slate and $1.076 million earned from 192 career outings.
