Monday Harness Preview for 2/10/2014
With another blast of arctic air headed for the Mid-Atlantic Region this week, the best way to avoid the elements is to find a good place to watch and wager on the races Monday evening and often Dover Downs rates the first choice.
While most of the value plays appear to be on the latter half of the Monday card at Dover, there does look like the potential for an early overlay. Last week in her seasonal debut, Danish Diligence finished a decent third despite racing third over behind dull cover into a quick back half. She should be able to work out a much better trip this evening and get the better of Ballinrobe late.
Many races later in the evening's ninth race, a non-winners of $12,000 last six class for pacing fillies and mares, don't be bashful about taking a swing at Melissa's Fancy. Despite being the beaten favorite in a lesser class last week, Melissa's Fancy could work out a trip from post nine this evening and prevail at or near her 12-1 morning line price. She was a gritty second last week and should be able to handle the modest class jump.
One race later in the feature, the $20,000 Filly-Mare Open, give Cooking The Books a chance to earn her first victory of the campaign. Second three times in her four previous starts, Cooking The Books has tried a variety of methods against the likes on Monochromatic and Jeremes Sweetheart and just missed on three occasions. But the Josh Green trainee should finally get her picture taken this evening.
Then in the 11th, look for Beechwood Diana to overcome post seven at a decent price in this non-winners lifetime class for pacing distaffers. Beechwood Diana got locked in and shuffled out of contention last week and still rallied belatedly to get third in a good showing. Despite starting from post seven tonight, she should be able to find a spot early and be much more formidable in the latter stages.
Then two races later in the 13th, give Jj's Collegefund a chance at redemption. Last week he was second as the 4-5 favorite in the same class, but was locked in behind a tiring leader for much of the last half-mile. Despite starting from post seven, look for Jj's Collegefund to make her presence known early and then be in ideal position for the final furlong.
In the 14th race, two pacing mares look poised for their best effort although one will clearly be a much shorter price than the other. Jk Letitgo was simply monstrous in her seasonal debut last week, winning by nearly eight lengths in 1:53.4 as the 1-20 choice. But she is also listed as 4-5 on the morning line and will likely dip below that price, so simply playing her flat seems ill-advised.
But looking to upend 'Jk' is Smokin American, a good second last week as the 7-5 choice in the other half of this split class. Smokin American will likely be closer to 7-1 than 7-5 this evening due to the presence of Jk Letitgo and thos two should complete the exacta. Of course, at 7-1 Smokin American is a flat bet value and if she does prevail the exacta with her on top of 'Jk' could be a healthy $30 or more.
