The spotlight will shine Saturday on Mountaineer, with a pair of Grade 3 races, including the West Virginia Derby.
Whether you're handicapping the track for the first time all year or you're thinking of adding Mountaineer to your evening betting rituals, let's check in on some trends!
Jockeys
Perennial top rider Charle Oliveros leads in the jockey standings, with 58 wins (from 261 starts, 22%), 10 clear of Gabriel Lagunes (48 wins, 227 starts, 21%).
Lagunes leads in dirt route wins (18 wins, 47 starts, 38%), and boasts a +51% ROI. Oliveros is second (12 wins, 41 starts, 29%), with a +45% ROI in dirt routes.
On the grass, Oliveros leads (11 wins, 65 starts, 17%), but Luis Colon has made the most out of a limited number of turf rides. His seven victories come from just 32 starts (22%), with a slight positive ROI (+4%).
If you are looking for longshots, watch jockey Adrian Flores. Across all starts this meet, he has 23 wins from 147 starts (16%), with a +68% ROI. Zooming in on runners at 8-1 or more, he has 11 wins from 91 starts (12%), with a +128% ROI, which cements him as the jockey to watch on big prices.
Trainers
Once again, Eddie Clouston and Jay Bernardini are dueling at the top of the trainer table.
Clouston (28 wins, 183 starts, 15%) has a one-win lead over Bernardini (27 wins, 160 starts, 17%), with Eric Reed in third (20 wins, 60 starts, 33%).
Rafael Flores has been particularly live with longshots. With horses at 8-1 or more, Flores is four wins from 21 starts (14%), with another 10 in-the-money finishes, which means 50% of his longer-priced horses have at least invaded the exotics.
On turf, take a long look if Neil Morris enters a horse. He has six wins in 19 starts on the meet, but all have come on the lawn. That puts Morris (six wins, 13 starts, 46%) second in turf wins, behind only Bernardini (10 wins, 78 starts, 13%), and Morris also boasts a +191% ROI on the grass.
