Multiple Cold Exactas, $28 Frosh Winner, Contenders Hit The Board All Weekend

Few featured contenders from our blogs were uninvolved with paying off this past weekend. The public hoarded some but the sheer volume of paying ponies and a few cold exactas made for a strong few days.

The biggest score took place at Scioto on Sept. 12 in the Ohio Sires Stakes (OHSS), where we nabbed the highest paying winner of the eight finals with frosh-filly trotter Count On Kami ($28.40, $6.20, $3.80). One more winner, in the soph-filly pace mile, was Karlee Sue ($4.00, $3.80, $3.00). Only two of the eight finals found our contenders off the board as we delivered seconds My Tweed Heart ($4.00, $3.20), Nobles Finesse ($9.40, $7.40) and Student Of Life ($4.40, $3.00), that one contributing to a $11.60 exacta with the favorite. One third came from Neelys Messenger (3.80).

Also at Scioto Sept. 12, we nailed the upset in the Jim Ewart Memorial with Doo Wop Hanover ($12.80, $5.80, $2.40) and our second choice won the Sam Nobel Memorial: Wind Of The North ($5.80, $3.20, $2.40).

At Mohawk on Sept. 12, one elim for the Canadian Trotting Classic was easy with Pinkman ($3.70, $2.70, $2.30) while we were last after a break with Jetpedia (32-1) in the other.

As predicted we were spot on with Artspeak ($4.80, $2.40, $2.10) as he broke a Simcoe Stakes record winning easily, though beating much lesser talent than he has faced recently.

The Maple Leaf Trot elims were a bit annoying, as the public did not ignore Bee A Magician, who was second ($2.60, $2.10) at 3-5 and beaten by a trotter we backed two weeks ago in the Sebastian K Invitational, Natural Herbie, who nosed “Bee” at 12-1. In the other elim, we were third with a very rough-gaited Obrigado ($3.40).

Friday, Sept. 11 in the William Wellwood elims at Mohawk, we had two seconds. The first was Brooklyn Hill ($2.30, $2.10) and the other was Marion Maurader ($3.70, n/s), the latter conspiring in the exacta ($10.90) with our other contender, the crowd’s choice, Southwind Frank.

The Elegantimage elims featured our winner Muscle Baby Doll ($5.20, $2.60, $2.40) in a cold exacta ($11.60) with our second choice Wild Honey, while in the other elim our first choice, Danielle Hall ($6.10, n/s) was in the place spot and the obvious Mission Brief won for an exacta worth $10.60.

Our betting supplement to the main blog the Breeders Crown Countdown (BCC), at TwinSpires.com in league with the Hambletonian Society offered a few winners. On Sept. 12 there was Habitat ($2.70, $2.10) in a cold exacta worth $13.20 with Wings Of Royalty ($10.00, n/s); and there was Jewels In Hock ($6.00, $2.50, n/s); as well as we gave you Betting Exchange ($3.20, $3.70 ok, $2.40) from the New York Sires Stakes championships.

Sept. 11 at the Meadows in state-bred action we were second with Spider Man Hanover ($3.40, $2.60) and third with I Said Diamonds ($2.10) and Woman’s Will (n/s/), while Hititoutofthepark scratched in the fourth split.

We apologize for covering the Helen Smith Memorial at Freehold in the BCC as a betting race, since as was a non-betting event.

Every week, check the BCC blog to find great wagering opportunities for “Crown” eligibles as they race their ways to the Crown finals. This year the Crown finals take place at Woodbine on Saturday, Oct. 24, with elims the week before.

H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete the exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 43 active horses (a 16-percent win hit rate and a 49 percent in-the-money hit rate). One note: the list included three horses at Batavia that at the time we thought would be betting races; they turned out to be non-betting races.

News & Notes

It’s time for another streaking-driver test, this one concerning Jimmy Whittemore, who won five races on the Sept. 11 program at Vernon Downs. Whittemore’s highest paying horse in the quintet brought back $5.90. He drove 11 horses that night, making an investment in his wins $22.00. His five winners returned $23.00, so Whittmore passes the test by a slightest of margins with a profit of one dollar. All of his losing horses were 4-1 and up, with a 17-1 coming in second while he was off the board with a 20-1, another 17-1, a 7-1 and a 6-1. Although he passed with a profit, in general, Whittemore’s streak was good for him and poor for bettors.

Kentuckiana Farms announced the passing of Jate Lobell, one of the great stars of the sport’s heyday and an important sire through the decades he was at stud. Jate Lobell was 31 and stood at Kentuckiana Farms for 22 years before he was retired in 2009.

Throughout his stallion career his progeny earned $105,341,187. His offspring averaged over $82,000 per starter, having produced such stars as Riyadh, David’s Pass, Gothic Dream and Village Jasper to name a few. Jate Lobell a super sire was also a prolific broodmare sire. His daughters produced winners of over $203,978,794 including Mister Big, My Little Dragon, Southwind Lynx and Sportswriter.

The son of No Nukes – J R Amy was a world champion at two, undefeated in 15 starts. At three, Jate Lobell won the Confederation Cup, North America Cup and New Jersey Classic among other top glamour-boy pacing events.  He retired to stud duty after a remarkable three-year-old season as the third-richest pacer of all time and was syndicated at an incredible $12 million.

It’s almost Little Brown Jug time as the Delaware, Ohio track readies to open for a powerful week (each important race day is during the week and we will be covering them on site and off site), beginning Sept. 20). Wiggle It Jiggleit is the dead-on choice to win two-straight heats to be champion of the “Jug.” One-time future-book choice Artspeak is the fourth choice. Others in the top 10 include Dudes The Man, Lost For Words, In The Arsenal, Reverend Hanover, Rockin In Heaven, My Hero Ron, Revenge Shark and Split The House, all of which have been beaten through the season by “Wiggle.”
