Older pacers continue winning ways
The Tuesday evening cards at Rosecroft Raceway have gotten more lucrative and more competitive in recent years, but they still continue to be a haven for durable older pacers who still know how to find the winner's circle.
In Tuesday's opener at Rosecroft, Main A Dieu Too (Roger Plante, Jr.) benefited from a two-hole trip and edged clear late in 1:54.3. A nine-year-old Cambest gelding owned and trained by Gary Ewing of Ge's Romanero fame, Main A Dieu Too notched his first win in nine starts this year and now owns 33 wins and $317,000 banked from 199 lifetime outings.
Two races later on the card, Racin Best (Russell Foster) lived up to his name when he brushed to command before the half and prevailed in a bottom-level conditioned event for pacers in 1:55.1. An 11-year-old Cambest gelding trained by Joe Eisenhower, Racin Best notched his second win in 13 starts this year and his 31st score from 259 lifetime outings.
One race later an even older pacer rallied for a victory when Walton Shaw A (Pat Berry) swept to command down the backside and romped home seven lengths clear in 1:55 in $5000 claiming event. A 14-year-old Walton Hanover gelding trained by Curtis Daniels, Walton Shaw A notched his second win in seven starts this year and now boasts 41 wins in 269 career outings. Walton Shaw A could reach 300 lifetime starts before the end of the year, which will be his final one on the track since Standardbreds must retire upon turning 15.
Then just past the midway point of the card, Hi Sir (Russell Foster) rallied third over to capture the $12,000 Open 2 Handicap in 1:52.1. An eight-year-old Sir Luck gelding owned and trained by Foster, Hi Sir has won three straight races and sports 34 victories in 174 lifetime outings and again looms a serious contender for horse of the meet honors.
Then two races later, Caviart Tyler (Jonathan Roberts) benefited from a pocket trip and prevailed in a conditioned event in 1:54. A nine-year-old Dragon Again gelding trained by Megan Roberts, Caviart Tyler recorded his second
win in nine starts this year and boasts 46 wins and $252,000 banked from 212 lifetime outings. Like Hi Sir, he has already garnered horse of the meet honors.
