Pacing Fillies and Mares Top Tuesday Card at Dover Downs
Whether you enjoy watching younger pacers climb through their conditioned ranks to join the Open ranks or simply focus on the upper classes at various standardbred tracks like Dover Downs, the Tuesday cards for pacing fillies and mares often offer something for both.
Tuesday's ninth race is the first part of a tough, split non-winners of five races or $80,001 lifetime class for pacing fillies and mares and the race includes a pair of youthful foes who have both won their first two starts of the year and both could eventually join the Open ranks here for distaffers.
Both railbound Barbara's Shadow (Victor Kirby) and Vintage Babe (Yannick Gingras), who will leave from post three, have have their first two starts of the season and both own identical 1:52.2 scores over the Delaware five-eighths mile oval. Barbara's Shadow has won twice and banked nearly $15,000 for trainer Leigh Raymer, while Vintage Babe has won two times and earned $13,000 for trainer Ed Gannon, Jr. of local Looking Hanover fame. Both talented pacing ladies were bred by Winbak Farm in Chesapeake City, Maryland, and both could someday join the Open ranks on the Delaware circuit.

Then one race later on the card, onlookers will have the chance to see the top pacing distaffers on the circuit compete in the Winners Over/Open Handicap. Enhance Your Mind (Kirby), has won both of her starts this year and banked $18,000 while taking a mark of 1:50.2, while Sweet Bobbie (Art Stafford, Jr.) owns one win and one second-place finish with seasonal earnings of $9000 and a mark of 1:51 for trainer Gary Ewing of Ge's Romanero fame from the early 1980's.
But while Enhance Your Mind and Sweet Bobbie look to maintain their winning ways, both Velocity Lana (Jonathan Roberts) and Nat A Virgin (Corey Callahan) rate upset chances in the top class for pacing distaffers. Velocity Lana has finished second once and third once in two unsuccessful tries for trainer Trish Foulk, while Nat A Virgin was second in her seasonal debut for trainer Dylan Davis. Several other mares in this even rate upset chances, but Velocity Lana and Nat A Virgin have the best shot at ending Enhance Your Mind's winning ways to start the campaign.
