Pacing Mares Highlight Tuesday Card at Dover Downs

January 23rd, 2017

In the weeks between the National Football League conference championship games and Super Bowl 51 in Houston, most thoroughbred racing fans will be content to watch and wager on the inaugural $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park this Saturday, although standardbred fans will stay busy throughout the week.

Tuesday's card at Dover Downs will once again highlight the pacing fillies and mares and many of the best younger horses on the circuit will compete in several lifetime condition events while the top distaffers will clash again in the Open Handicap.

Tuesday's eighth race is a competitive, non-winners of $12,201 last six starts class for pacing fillies and mares and three horses look poised to score here and climb into the Open. Sayulita (Corey Callahan) has won once in three starts this year and owns a seasonal mark of 1:52.4, while durable Paradise Lost (Montrell Teague) is one of the grittiest pacing mares on the circuit has been second once and third once in three tries. Cover Up Hall (Allan Davis) has won twice in three starts and owns a 1:51.1 mark and rates better than her 15-1 morning line price.

One race later in one of the lifetime conditioned races on the card, Westsluckycam (Yannick Gingras) has displayed plenty of talent and ability in three starts with one win and one second-place finish and $11,000 banked and a 1:53.2 mark. Truth Isalwaysright has won once in three starts, while On Your Six (Davis) has won once in two starts for trainer Richard Lewis. In The Shadows (Tony Morgan) owns a 1-1-0 slate and 1:53.2 mark from three seasonal tries and looks poised to climb the condition ladder.

Then one race later the top pacing distaffers will be on display in the Winners Over/Open Handicap, Nat A Virgin (Callahan) looks poised to end her early bridesmaid status after a pair of second-place efforts, while Elliesjet N (Jonathan Roberts) will seek her second straight score. But the razor sharp Enhance Your Mind (Victor Kirby) has won all three of her starts this year for owner-trainer Bryan Truitt of Speciality fame and seeks to enhance her reputation and bankroll from her outside assignment.

Then one race later in the 11th, look for Barbara's Shadow (Kirby) to regain her winning ways after finishing second to the sharp Vintage Babe at this level last week. Barbara's Shadow had won her first two starts of the season and owns an $18,750 bankroll from three starts this season for trainer Leigh Reymer. Dismissal (Callahan) won her season debut, while Pink Rock has one victory and one runner-up finish and $10,600 bankroll from three starts this year.
