Palm Beach Weekly Wrap Up 11-20-2016

November 21st, 2016

Fantastic last week of racing action we just experienced at the Palm Beach Kennel Club!  The National Championship chatter is getting louder as we head into the winter season of the sport & Ethel Is Here had a statement win that proved that she is one of the greatest ever.

Here's the top stories we saw from this past week at "The Beach."
This Is Still Ethel's Track

The match up the fans have clamored, begged & waited for all season finally came to fruition as the track champion Ethel Is Here took on teammate and current season wins leader Fraulein Morgan Friday afternoon.  Many including myself wondered if Fraulein had taken over the throne as top middle distance racer at Palm Beach with her current 15 wins and remarkable consistency since the new campaign started.  Without the two actually meeting, any debate about who was the best was all fluff until they settled it on the field.
Ethel and Morgan both from the Janie Carroll Kennel went out together to start the contest and stayed with each other the entire race.  Ultimately, the Derby Champ was able to take the win for her 59th career victory in 37.96 secs. Morgan ran strong and finished 2nd by a few lengths.

Interesting story that longtime trainer of Ethel and family owner of the kennel Crystal Carroll and owner of Fraulein Morgan Monte Jacobs are engaged.  Carroll told me that she wasn't thrilled that the two ran against each other but glad to see that they finished 1-2.  House divided!
Daytona 550 Invitations Out

The race for the National Championship is really going to start to heat up in the next few weeks.  United Greyhound Racing has made their selections and sent out official invitations for the 8 hound field that is set for takeoff on Saturday, January 21st at the Daytona Beach Kennel Club.

No idea at this point whether a Palm Beach hound has been selected.  With how wide open the season has been, there is a good chance the initial selections have left South Florida in the dark.
Not to worry if you are concerned that America's favorite greyhound destination will miss out on the Daytona 550 for the first time ever.  Out of the three selections that have ever represented Palm Beach (Storm Control, JS SpeedyPebbles & Pat C Short Cut) Storm was the only one that was on the initial invites back in 2015.  Pebbles & Short Cut both were alternates to start but ultimately ended up in the big dance anyway.
Stay tuned to our news feeds for updated info on the selections.  All invites have until December 3rd to decide whether they will be traveling down to the worlds most famous beach to compete for the sports most lucrative prize.

Newest Top 25 Revealed

United Greyhound Racing released their newest National Top 25 Poll this past weekend and Palm Beach was well represented once again. The rankings which measures the performances nationally from September 6th- November 12th is one of the biggest barometers for who gets favored for Daytona 550 invitations.
"Kid Dynamite" Superior Tyson from B & B Racing made the biggest move of any of the Kennel Club superstars as he went from unranked to 11th with seven victories in the time frame.

Fraulein Morgan rose up to 13th & Ethel Is Here checked in at 17.
Palm Beach alumni Oaks Maddy after winning the Southland Arkansas Bred Sprint Championship & the Kings Vs Queens Classic rose all the way up to #1.
Gv MooseIsLoose after flying up the charts to #4 in the last poll fell completely out of the Top 25 after struggling to find the winners circle the past 6 weeks.

Here is the rest of the poll results:

Welcome To The White House & The 3/8ths Mile!

The Trump Family makes headlines no matter what they are doing...even in greyhound racing.

Ivanka Trump from the Brindle Kennel switched over to the 660 yard Pat C Rendezvous Course on Saturday afternoon & immediately scored for the 38.88 secs victory.
Must be a November thing because the human Trumps and greyhound Trumps seem to be loving this time of year.
Watch Out For Sunny

Believe it or not, the $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity Final is just over a month away.  This 2 year old and under tourney is the appetizer to the Big 3 Stakes series and will once again host it's Final the day after Christmas on December 26th.

One youngster that has clearly stated that she is the early favorite to raise the trophy is O Ya Sunflower from the Lester Raines Kennel. "Sunny" picked up her first Grade A victory in Sunday's Matinee, topping Whirlin Toodlelu and a host of others in 30.06 secs.

Watch out for this potential champion and for more info on the Futurity in the next few weeks.
That's all we have for this week. We'll see you next time for the Wrap-Up!
