Palm Beach Weekly Wrap Up 11-6-2016

November 7th, 2016

The racing season has now hit November!  As we continue to get ever so close towards the biggest months in greyhound racing coming up this winter, there are great story lines happening right now at The Palm Beach Kennel Club.  Here's the top stories we witnessed from the past week at America's favorite greyhound destination.

Superstar Saturday

Palm Beach took Superstar Saturday to an entirely different level this past weekend for the Breeders Cup.  The racing department always does a fantastic job of making sure that the cards during the big horse weekends show off the top talent in South Florida.  Saturday Palm Beach had an unheard of 10 Grade A races in the Matinee, which is the most I've ever witnessed in 30 years of watching this place. Most tracks wouldn't even attempt something like that, but Palm Beach made it look effortless.  The fans responded by pumping $605,000 into the Matinee handle, by far the most by any greyhound track in the country.

The stars didn't disappoint either.  It all got started with GV MooseIsLoose from the Douglas Kennel in the 11th Race, as he found his stride once again from his favorite 1 box and took home the easy 30.14 secs victory.  The calls of Moooooooooooose could be heard all throughout the building from fans well after the spectacular greyhound had already finished. Moose stayed right near the top of the track championship race getting his 13th season win.

Not to be overshadowed was kennel mate Whirlin Toodlelu in the 12th Race.  She ripped the fastest sprint time of the day, getting her 5th straight victory in typical comeback fashion with the 29.78 secs win.

"Toodles" has become a social media monster the last two months, as her late fire to steal victories has increased her fan base ten fold. With Moose & Toodlelu leading the way, is any team going to be able to stop the Douglas Kennel this season?

The the living legend showed up....

Track and Derby Champion Ethel Is Here from the Janie Carroll Kennel lined up in the 14th & took care of business for her 58th career victory at "The Beach."  Track announcer Mike Jameson shared a video with me before the race showing Ethel's pregame routine of rubbing her back against the outside wall near the starting box and then laying in the grass after.  Jameson told me she does this every single time she starts.  Every superstar has a pregame routine and greyhounds are certainly no different.

Here's the replay of Ethel's dominating run:

The finale was the race everybody wanted to see, as the "Knockout King" Superior Tyson from B & B Racing was looking for his 5th straight win.  After two months of utter domination on the Royal Palm Course by Tyson, the eyes of the National Championship Committee are squarely on the St Pats Champ.

Tyson didn't break out of the box well in this one but roared back to claim second behind Tnt Ole Red from the Lester Raines Kennel. Tyson hasn't lost two in a row since early September, so you know a bounce back effort is coming the next time he is slated to start, which will be later on this week.

Outstanding job by everybody at Palm Beach for a Saturday that all fans in attendance and watching from home thoroughly enjoyed.

On Track To Beat Cancer Event Announced

Palm Beach announced this week that they will be hosting their annual on track walk to beat cancer on Saturday, November 26th.  You can purchase t-shirts at the track all month long for $25 that will directly benefit research to try and cure this terrible disease.

I've had the pleasure of being on the track and it is a memory that will last a lifetime.  If you get the chance to be at the track on the 26th, walk a lap on the track for a cause that every one of us has a connection to.

WSOP Ready To Roll In South FLA

The World Series of Poker is back at the Palm Beach Kennel Club!  Florida's only WSOP stop on their world famous tour starts this Thursday, November 10th and goes all the way until November 21st.

What does this mean for the racing scene? WSOP Feature Races of course! Look for the first blanket to be given out on Thursday for the kickoff award feature, that was won by HotFoot Pink from Suncoast Racing last year.

Each day will highlight another Grade A showdown during the WSOP to watch that usually is highly entertaining.  Enjoy the poker and racing during this annual tournament!

October Top 10 Rankings

One of our favorite things to put out every month is our Palm Beach Top Rankings.  Our October Rankings were revealed earlier in the week and we have a new leader atop the polls.

After steamrolling the competition all month long, Superior Tyson took over the #1 ranking, followed by "The Bacheorette" Fraulein Morgan at #2.  Ethel Is Here moved up to #3 and The Moooooooooooose slid down to #4.

To see the complete list, here's the link to our rankings:

That's all we have for this week.  We'll see you next time for the Wrap Up!
