Pick 3 of the Week: Colonial Downs Saturday, August 29

The Jamestown S. will close out the Pick 3 of the Week at Colonial Downs on Saturday. 

Race 5 Wagers

• $1 Pick 3: 2,4,6,8,9 with 6 with 1,5,6,8 ($20)
• $1 Pick 3: 6 with 2,5,6,8 with 1,5,6,8 ($16)

Race 5 – Maiden Claiming

The 5 1/2-furlong dash on the main strip attracted a field of nine fillies and mares in the opening leg of the play. I’ll single the Saffie Joseph-trained #6 Gigi Spirit (6-5) on one ticket, and spread with multiple runners in a second play. The Global Campaign filly takes a massive class drop off the layoff moving down from the special weight ranks, and I’m not entirely sure what to make of it. She could obviously romp in the dash with Nik Juarez in the irons. 

If the favorite fails to fire, a case can be made for #2 Starship Polaris (15-1), #4 Soul Healer (20-1), #8 Aqua Blaze (3-1), and #9 Flashy Aviator (5-2). 

Race 6 – Maiden Special Weight

The middle leg of the sequence is for the boys going 1 1/16 miles on the grass in a fairly competitive event. #6 Executive (7-5) missed by a neck at Aqueduct in June in his first try with blinkers on while making his first appearance for De Paz. The Constitution colt has run some good ones against better foes in the past and will be tough to upend under Rosado. He will be a single for me on one ticket. 

#2 Souper Cha Ching (5-2) is from a productive family of grassy performers and will go postward for a dangerous trainer first time out on the weeds. #5 Crystal Hill (8-1) comes back to the flat after a pair of jump tries, and the son of More Than Ready ran two races good enough to beat this field last summer. #8 Steel Golden (10-1) adds blinkers, stretches out in distance, and also tries the grass for the first time. The Gun Runner colt is out of a Kitten's Joy mare and figures to move forward on the surface change. 

Race 7 – Jamestown S. 

Eight juveniles will speed 5 1/2 panels on the grass in the feature, and I will include a few runners in a race that lacks a standout. Top pick #1 Harewood (5-1) led throughout on the main oval the second time out with blinkers removed and rates a big chance for Brittany Russell. The Daredevil colt will have Loveberry in the controls. 

#5 Fission (8-5) has plenty of speed and was a winner in his lone run on the turf in advance of this one, but I expect him to be overbet. #6 Remembertheword (8-1), one of three juveniles signed on for Corrales, is kin to a winner on the lawn and comes off a stakes third on the dirt at this venue. #8 Do The Right Thing (6-1) makes his second run for Graham Motion, and this barn can never be ignored.
