The Pick 3 of the Week will come from Del Mar on Sunday, where the headliner of the afternoon will be the closing leg of the play.
Race 5 Wager
- $1 Pick 3: 4,7,9 with 2,4 with 1,7,8,9 ($24)
Race 5 – Stormy Liberal S.
A well-matched field of 10 will speed five-eighths on the green in a challenging start to the play. #7 Book Smart (8-1) is a two-time winner on the surface and is also the ‘speed of the speed’ under Mike Smith. The Bob Hess trainee could be a square price in the dash to get things started.
#4 Yellow Card (9-2) has elevated his game since focusing on turf sprints and comes in with good current form for Michael McCarthy. #9 Unconquerable Keen (7-2) has won the race in each of the past two seasons but still might fly under the radar a bit for D’Amato. The Clodovil gelding will rally from off the pace under regular pilot Rispoli.
Race 6 – Optional Claiming
Bob Baffert has an imposing pair of sophomores in the middle leg, and I will use both. Grade 3 victor #2 Getaway Car (5-2) cuts back to a dash off the long layoff, and I expect him to fly out of the gate and lead this group for a long time. The Curlin colt will be sent from the break under Flavien Prat.
#4 Midland Money (3-1) is a fine talent in his own right and wouldn’t be a surprise beneath Juan Hernandez. The $650,000 son of Shancelot burned some money when beaten last time out in his first run with blinkers off, but he can make amends for that with even slight improvement in his second run off the short layoff. Juan Hernandez retains the mount.
Race 7 – Matriarch S. (G1)
A deep cast of ladies will jaunt one mile on the lawn in the feature. Juddmonte homebred #9 Segesta (7-2) missed by a neck in the First Lady S. (G1) at Keeneland most recently and has to be on the ticket with Prat taking the reins.
I’m still not sure if Graham Motion’s #7 Heredia (8-1) is a true miler, but she is surely classy and rolled home a facile winner in her lone prior run on the course two back. Grade 1 starlet #8 Ag Bullet (3-1) was a close third in a deep group last season and will be tough if she avoids a speed duel under Johnnie V. And #1 Medoro (6-1) is so consistent that she is difficult to leave off of my ticket breaking from the rail beneath Rispoli.
Third times a charm for #9 Segesta, who graduates in R3 at Keeneland for trainer Chad Brown with @iradortiz in the irons! 🍀
