A pair of Pick 4 wagers is offered on the card for the first Saturday of racing at the Fair Grounds meeting, and I will choose the latter one, which includes two of the three stakes races to be contested.
Race 6 Wager
- 50-cent Pick 4: all with 1,3,7,8 with 1,2,4 with 3 ($48)
Race 6 – Maiden Special Weight
An especially well-matched cast of juveniles will trek 1 1/16 miles on the dirt to get things underway. Each of the six runners that have started prior to this tilt has shown a level of promise, while the pair of first-time starters have the pedigree and connections to be runners, as well. I’m using the ‘all’ button to play it safe in the first leg.
Race 7 – Andrew Ney Memorial S.
A swift field of nine will speed six panels on the main strip in the second piece of the play, and I feel that going four deep will get me through to the next step. Defending champ #1 Geaux Sugar (2-1), stakes winner #3 Smash It (6-1), #7 El Dinero (7-2), who was runner-up in the race last season, as well as multiple stakes victor #8 Not On Herb (9-2), will be the logical inclusions in the dash.
Geaux Sugar gets his third stakes win of the meet with a win in the Costa Rising S. at @fairgroundsnola! 🏆@mitchellmurrill was up for trainer Keith Bourgeois.

Race 8 – Optional Claiming
The one-mile turf endeavor for state-bred runners attracted an overflow group of 16, with three being main-track only entrants. #4 Pegaso (5-1) has never run on the surface and is not in dream form currently, but the gelding dons a 3-1-1-1 lifetime line on the green and lands in a winnable spot. He will make one run in the lane under Pedroza.
#1 Calicoco (7-2) returns from the long layoff and gets the rail for Wilson. The dark bay is four-for-six with a third from six local runs and has to be included as a course specialist. I like how #2 Titanium Deal (6-1) has taken a big step forward since moving to the lawn three back. The four-year-old might be a bit cheaper than some of these, but I can’t ignore his grassy form with Nieves riding.
Race 9 – Jacob V. Morreale Memorial S.
A competitive field of 11 will go two turns to conclude the play. It’s an aggressive single in a tough race, but #3 Letmikefigureitout (8-1) has vastly improved this season and enters off a big run at Evangeline Downs in August when registering a 99 Brisnet Speed rating. Daaher gelding is quick and can handle two turns, and he benefits from the fact that many of the main players in this spot come from well off the pace. I expect the four-year-old to be in the lead turning for home under Magnon.
