Pick 5 Preview: Santa Anita - January 12, 2014
With little stakes action on Sunday across the country, we turn to the Pick 5 at Santa Anita, which starts with race one, post time 3:30 pm ET, a $32,000 claiming race for four-year-olds and upward going one mile on the turf.
Race 1: A race seemingly void of pace gives the advantage to KINGPIN RYNO, who is stretching to a route of ground for the first time since July. He is two-for-three over the Santa Anita turf and has won at this distance. POLYTECHNICIEN and TRELAWNY will not be far off the pace.
Race 2: A pair of Jeff Mullins trained geldings, I DON'T CARE WHO and FULL CONSENT, and GALLANT CHARM are hard to separate in this main track route race. TENKILLER KID just broke his maiden and has always promised more than delivered. He may have figured it all out and retains jockey Rafael Bejarano. DIRTY SWAGG will be the longest shot on the board and least likely to be on any pick-5 tickets.
Race 3: A difficult race to trust anyone so going to side with the 9-2 MOM NANA PETRIE for trainer Jeff Mullins and jockey Chantal Sutherland-Kruse. Mom Nana Petrie makes her second start off a nine month layoff and goes sprint to route. MOON RIDE is the second choice and morning line favorite. She is also stretching out to two turns and is bred to handle the distance and surface. This is a non-winners of two lifetime, but the other five fillies and mares in the field have a combined four wins in 56 starts. This will be both Mom Nana Petrie's and Moon Rides' sixth career start.
Race 4: ONE MAGICAL GIRL just finished second at this level, beaten a neck, and only need to replicate that race on the dirt to win here. J LOUIE looks second best on the class drop.
Race 5: Spreading out in pick-5 finale with and all-ball as the two favorites look to be vulnerable. SPLENDID FORTUNE is running for the first time since march 2013 while KATIE'S GARDEN just broke her maiden. Of course the two barns from which the two come from, Bob Baffert and John Shirreffs, are not to be taken lightly. If these two do not win race five, the pick-5 should pay very well.
