Player Quick Pick: Aqueduct 11/9/2014

November 9th, 2014

Race 8 at Aqueduct on Sunday looks like the type of event where horseplayers could find profits. Eight horses will enter the starting gate for the 1 mile journey over the Big A dirt and over half the field appears to have a shot at getting home first.

Claiming (35) for 3&Up F&M going 7f

8 – Pure Vida Zen – 8/1 – This six-year-old mare trained by Steve Klesaris was terrific when finishing second by only a head in her last on Oct. 30, a race going 6 furlongs at this level over the Aqueduct dirt. She had to pause at the quarter pole and that’s what caused her to miss in her last. If Guyanna and Frivolity knock heads early, the race should set up for Pure Vida Zen, who has the ability to stay within a length or two if needed. Jockey Angel Arroyo got to know her in the last and the extra furlong should definitely help her chances. She’s a nice looking overlay in a race that looks wide-open. The fact that she comes back after about a week is also a very good sign. The Klesaris trainee appears well meant.

7 – Frivolity – 5/2 – This talented four-year-old sired by Corinthian has had all sorts of trouble getting to the race track. She’s only run 3 times this year and she hasn’t run since finishing eighth by 21 lengths in an optional claiming $62.5K race in early May. Trainer David Jacobsen has had great success with horses going first time off the claim for him, 28% winners, 33% first time claiming, and 36% winners overall at the meet. The big knock, though, is that Jacobsen reached into the pocket book for $62.5K for this filly and now, first time, he’s running her for only $35K. There are only two works on the tab since the May run. That’s not a great sign, either. Then again, jockey Cornelio Velasquez thinks well enough of Frivolity to jump aboard. Velasquez is winning at 27%. Don’t be surprised if this miss goes gate to wire against this field.

2 – Misszippityslewda – 2/1 – This is the lowest level that Misszippiyslewda has ever run at. That by itself makes her a contender against this group. The fact that she’s trained by Michelle Nevin also gives her a leg up against these. The key is whether or not she’ll be able to track Guyanna and Frivolity before pouncing and then taking over in the stretch. The guess here is that horseplayers are going to believe she can, making Misszippityslewda a major favorite in this race. There are definitely some knocks, though. The works haven’t been good at all and Nevin could have put the four-year-old filly sired by City Zip into an optional claimer instead of this straight claimer. Like Frivolity, there is a question as to the true intentions from the connection of Misszippityslewda. The suspicious drop in class from the $62.5K level to the $35K level, coupled with the likely low odds, should give horseplayers pause before putting Misszippityslewda on top in this event.
