Player Quick Pick: Belmont Park for 10/5/2014

October 5th, 2014

The rain didn’t keep Ring Weekend from winning the Grade 3 Hill Prince at Belmont Park on Saturday. Although no rain is expected, there could be some moisture left on the grass when they run Race 9, a tough turf sprint race that has attracted a full field.

10 – One Time Only – 7/2 – This four-year-old filly sired by Lemon Drop Kid goes second time for trainer Phillip Serpe. Serpe wins at only 8% with horses that run second time for him, but he gets 50% of those horses in the money. One Time Only has a good shot at raising Serpe’s win percentage with horses going a second time for him. Her last race, at 7 furlongs over the Belmont turf in September, was absolutely terrific. She only lost by 1.5 lengths to finish second and made a menacing middle move before flattening out. Since this race is a furlong less, she might take such a move all the way to the wire this time. Serpe wins 32% with his beaten favorites and the addition of blinkers should help jockey Jose Lezcano keep One Time Only’s mind on racing. She figures to get a perfect 3 lengths behind the speed stalking trip before Lezcano pushes the go button.

3 – All Mine Tonight – 6/1 – If there is some moisture left in the Belmont lawn on Sunday, All Mine Tonight might be the key horse in Race 9. The Holy Bull sired five-year-old mare goes into this off of a fantastic victory in a 7 furlong turf state-bred turf race at Saratoga. The grass was listed as yielding on that day. This will be the fourth race in a row in which Javier Castellano will ride and appears that Castellano has gotten to know the mare. In the first race, the duo ended up finishing fourth. The second time Javier jumped aboard, All Mine Tonight finished second. Then came the victory at Saratoga. She has the ability to stay as close to the pace as Castellano wants her to but she can also close from the clouds if need be. Javier’s on a live one in Belmont’s ninth on Sunday.

12 – Double the Energy – 3/1 – It’s all about the turf record with this Linda Rice trained five-year-old mare. Double the Energy has 3 wins and a second place finish from 5 races over the Belmont Park turf. She also has 6 victories, a second and a third place finish from 14 lifetime races over the turf. Double the Energy has won at the distance and even though breaking from post-position 12 may not help her chances, jockey Cornelio Velasquez should put her on the lead with Fancy Boss and Henry’s Gal and if the turf is fast, she’ll be tough to run down. Not only that, but Velasquez has been aboard for this one’s last 7 starts; the familiarity should help when the real running starts at the top of the stretch. Don’t discount the chalks chances to win this because Double the Energy definitely has a nose for the wire with 9 wins from 23 starts.
