Player Quick Pick: Del Mar Pick 6 for 7/18/2014

July 18th, 2014

by Molly Jo Rosen

Well... we survived opening day!

Now we get to start answering the real questions: how was the track playing (pretty fair), who are the hot jockeys (Van Dyke, Garcia) and trainers (Belvoir won 2), and can the Pick 6 be hit (apparently: no).

Good news: we start the weekend with a $106k carryover. And I think it's hittable today. Hopefully. *fingers crossed*

Here's how I would play it... note: horses are in program order, not preference

Del Mar race 3 | 8 pm ET OC 20k / N1X for 3&up Cal-bred/sired going 1-1/16 mi. (T) 4-Boozer: yet to run a bad race this year 5-Benba: ultra-consistent & lone try further than a mile was a near-miss

Exotic Key: 8-Pressure Time is a solid down-the-hill runner, should appreciate the added ground & may have needed first v. winners last out; and I'm not a huge fan of speed drawn outside on the turf, but 11-Glitter of Silver is super consistent

Del Mar race 4 | 8:30 pm ET Maiden (20-18) for 3&up going 6f (A) 1-Tribal Dude: blinkers go back on as he takes class plummet 2-Salt Power: gets class relief off the near-year layoff for Belvoir 8-Pioneer Charlie: Stidham gave him time after facing good horses back east

Del Mar race 5 | 9 pm ET Claiming (8-7) for 3&up F&M going 6f (A) 3-Goldilocks Planet: always runs her race & Belvoir gives her a class drop off the layoff 6-One Magical Girl: always right there at the wire & Baltas/Stra are 2-for-5

Exotic Key: 7-Siempre Esperanza doesn't like to win, but she'll spoil your superfectas if you leave her off

Del Mar race 6 | 9:30 pm ET OC 80k/C for 3&up going 5f (T) 4-Merit Man: Hess gave him time 5-Caracortado: if he's right / back to his old self, he towers over this field

Exotic Key: 2-Boat Trip because when he's right, he's a talent (also because if I leave him off the list, he'll win by the length of the stretch ~ he's one of those horses for me) & 3-Wine Police on the G1 drop

Del Mar race 7 | 10 pm ET CTBA for 2yo Cal-bred/sired F going 5.5f (A)

You have to love a full field of young horses where no one has more than three career & everyone has basically the same form ~ but instead of breaking out the dartboard, let's try to hit this thing!

1-Really a Princess: near-miss debut behind a next-out winner 3-Singing Kitty: training great out of beautiful debut win 7-Lost Bus: I love a Heap horse anyway & that she's been training lights out off the daylight debut win makes me wanna run to the windows

Del Mar race 8 | 10:30 pm ET MSW for 3&up Cal-bred/sired going 1-1/16 mi. (T) 2-Lucky J Lane: line-through the debut last year for the troubled trip 5-Itsgettinhotinhere: improving & would've been closer in last but for the rough start 12-Missing Groom: always right there at the wire for 'Dorfer & it's only a matter of time til he crosses it first

This makes my $2 ticket... 4,5 / 1,2,8 / 3,6 / 4,5 / 1,3,7 / 2,5,12 ... $432 total
