Player Quick Pick: G2 West Virginia Derby for 8/2/2014
by Molly Jo Rosen
While so much attention is focused on Del Mar and Saratoga, let's look at a very interesting betting race away from the big two...
Note the forecast for Saturday in Chester, West Virginia: a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Light southeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Mountaineer race 8 | 5:45 pm ET G2 West Virginia Derby for 3yo going 1-1/8 mi.
1-Key for Success: maiden steps up 2-For Goodness Sake: in off back-to-back daylight scores & crushed in the maiden at 1-1/8 mi. 3-Classic Giacnroll: stretches back out after trying softer company likely for a confidence boost last out 4-Vicar's in Trouble: has to regain early '14 form & does own a win at 1-1/8 mi. 5-Tapiture: in off nice win, versatile & streaky + Rosie opts to ride him over Vicar 6-Gold Appointment: steps up off the win 7-Divine View: always runs his race 8-Only I Know: his two wins are here on an off track 9-Candy Boy: line-through the Kentucky Derby for the wipe-out on the first turn & both tries at 1-1/8 mi. were against runaway winners (first California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby, then Shared Belief last out in the Los Alamitos Derby)
Picks: 5 - 9 - 2 - 4
Exotic Key: 8 & 3
If it's going to be even the slightest of wet tracks, Only I Know at 50-1 becomes very interesting for your tris and supers, similarly look at Classic Giacnroll.
With regards to the weather and the favorites: Vicar's in Trouble broke his maiden at Fair Grounds on a good track and Tapiture ran a much-better-than-it-looked second in the G2 Rebel on a sealed wet fast track (if only Hoppertunity hadn't knocked him sideways inside the 8th pole...). Candy Boy - who races primarily in sunny Southern California - has never raced on an off-track.
