Player Quick Pick: G3 Cornhusker Hcp

June 28th, 2014

Some races you just look forward to every year: the Cornhusker is on my list. It's always a solid group of horses and could play out a hundred different ways. This year is no different!

1-Eriugena: will be rolling late 2-Lent: has to prove he belongs 3-Bellarmine: always right there are the wire 4-Right to Vote: won the local prep 5-Coin Broker: keeps stepping up 6-Ground Transport: consistent speed 7-Carve: needs a clean trip 8-Golden Ticket: always runs his race

This group of 8 is no different: of the newer shooters to the Handicap division are Lent (who has to prove he belongs against company his half-brother Fort Larned would've crushed), Coin Broker (who only broke his maiden three races back yet continues to impress), and rail-drawn Eriugena (who didn't fair so well in his first try v. graded competition last out).

Then you have the proven commodities: the consistent speed of Bellarmine, Right to Vote, and Ground Transport; the grit of a horse like Golden Ticket, and the closing skills of Carve. Admittedly I've been a huge Right to Vote fan since the spring of 2012 when he was training at Keeneland ran a monster runner-up finish in the G2 Peter Pan: Harty did a great job managing him early on and the big near-black son of Political Force has flourished since moving to Moquett.

So how do you play this? The Cornhusker is usually won by a consistent horse like Right to Vote or Golden Ticket, so that's my Exacta box. Underneath for the $.50 Trifectas, you have to use Ground Transport and Coin Broker. And for the $.10 Superfectas, I would use the All button or - more specifically - Coin Broker and Lent.

Picks: 4 - 8 - 6 - 5
