Player Quick Pick: Gulfstream Park for 2/7/2015
A lot of eyes will be paying attention to what’s happening over at Santa Anita Park on Saturday. California Chrome battles Shared Belief in the San Antonio Stakes. But, Gulfstream has a full day as well with the Donn Handicap as the feature. As entertaining as those two races figure to be the best overlay in all of Saturday’s stakes races could be in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap.

6 – War Correspondent – 8/1 – The odds may go lower once the gates open, but probably not by much since Imagining, Mshawish, Slumber and Lochte have all signed on for this. War Correspondent, a lightly raced five-year-old with a very good record of 3 wins, 2 second place and 1 third place finish from 6 starts, might be tested for class in this. Then again, he finished second in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes over Woodbines artificial track in his last and was sired by War Front, who charges $150,000 per live foal. On War Correspondent’s dam’s side is Rahy. It looks like the Cristophe Clement trainee has the best closing kick of any horse in the race.
3-Imagining – 3/1 – The Claude McGaughey trainee ran off fractions of 47.3 and 1:11 in the 1 ½ mile BC Turf and still managed to finish only 4.25 lengths behind. That’s how talented this seven-year-old is. This guy’s a warrior having won 8 out of 20 with 5 seconds. He’s also banked over $1 million. With Joel Rosario in the saddle, horseplayers can be guaranteed that he’ll give his all and be close at the wire, but there’s other speed in here, Golden Rifle will be gunning from the outset, and the off odds could be shorter than the 3 to 1 morning line. Imagining won’t offer a lot of value on top, but he’s a must use underneath.
8-Lochte – 5/1 – The Marcus Vitali trainee is almost unbeatable at Gulfstream Park. He’s won 4 out of 6 races over the Gulfstream turf, meaning that he’ll have his home backers bet him down to 4 to 1 or so. No worries. At 4 to 1, he still represents value compared to a lot of the others in this event. Lochte gets the return services of Paco Lopez who rode him to a victory in the Tampa Bay Derby in his last. This field is much tougher, but he’s on his home court and he’ll be sitting in the garden spot, right behind the dueling front runners, Imagining and Golden Rifle. If the pace isn’t too quick, Lochte will be in the best position to get first jump and hold off the closers.
