Player Quick Pick: Hawthorne for 4/27/2014

A little cloudy weather shouldn’t hamper either one of the races we’re looking at today.
Hawthorne Race Course 8 | 6:18 pm ET Claiming (30) for 4&up going 1 mi. (T)
7 – Duke of Del Rey – This six-year-old gelding might actually turn into a runner up in Hawthorne after spending some time at the Fairgrounds. Jockey Rafael Hernandez, who is winning at 22% this year, rode him for the first time over the main track and the pair did well enough to finish second with a big speed fig. Trainer Hugh Robertson has 11 victories from 24 starters at the meet, that’s 46%, so we know Duke of Del Rey is in good hands. If the odds are close to 9/2, he’s an overlay.
5 – Dancing Rock – This gelding, trained by Frank Kirby, was in over his head in his last, a $39,000n1x allowance event. He picks up Emmanuel Esquivel to ride, which has to be a positive, and has a decent running line on the lawn with 3 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds out of 13 lifetime races. The last time Dancing Rock ran at this level, the race was at Arlington Park, he won. That too was a mile event over the grass.
2 – Real Power – Trainer Michael Campbell has saddled only 11 horses this year. There isn’t a lot to go on regarding his ability to get horses ready first off the claim and Real Power does step up in class from the $18,000 claiming level to this, but he’s got speed in a race that doesn’t appear to have a lot. He could surprise at big odds.

2– Town Flirt – The Mark Hubley trainee ran very well in her last, an OC $40,000 event over the Polytrack at Turfway Park. She finished second in that race. It was her first off a layoff, meaning that she should improve, and the price could be right since a few Hawthorne regulars show up in here. Town Flirt will get a decent trip behind the speed. A real positive is that jockey Timothy Thornton has been terrific in 2014.
1 – Phaniebdancing –It’s hard not to make this three-year-old filly out of Congrats, which Rnb Racing Llc purchased for $175,000, the key horse in this event since she has a running line of 2 wins, 4 seconds, and a third out of 7 races over the Hawthorne dirt. She will get bet down and she doesn’t always win, but if you catch a price in the other legs or slots, the exotics should pay nicely.
7 – Polar Plunge – It’s tough to know how this horse is going to run. She might have distance issues since most of her victories appear to have come in sprints, but she’s taking a class drop and she has 7 wins out of 14 starts. Polar Plunge often times runs well off of a layoff and the works have been steady to very good. Unless she’s just done, she’s lost her last two races by a combined 23 lengths; you have to figure that she’ll be right there with these.
