Player Quick Pick - Monmouth-8/31/2014
By D.S. Williamson
A couple of stakes races highlight’s Monmouth’s Sunday card. Race 9, the Sorority Stakes, appears to be the more interesting race as Paco Lopez, fresh off of his victorious ride aboard It’smyluckyday in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, rides the morning line favorite, Perpetual Novena. For an 8 horse field, however, the race appears extremely deep. Paco’s going to have his work cut out for him.

Sorority Stakes 2yo F going 6f
1 – Save Rock and Roll – 4/1 – There is a ton of speed in this race and although this filly sired by Super Saver broke her maiden at first asking over the slop, she did it in fine enough fashion to warrant consideration for the top spot in this. She was behind by 6 lengths at the second call but managed to cut that distance to only .75 of a length at the top of the stretch before exploding for a 4.75 length victory. Trainer Joseph Orseno wins 17% with his last out maiden winners and jockey Trevor McCarthy, who is having a decent 2014, returns to ride. Save Rock and Roll has also put in two works since the maiden score including a sensational 5 furlongs in 1:00.2, the second best work of the day at the distance on August 24.
8 – Coco’s Wildcat – 3/1– This Kathleen O’Connell trainee has been ultra-impressive in her two lifetime starts, winning both by a combined 8.75 lengths. Her last, a victory at 5.5 furlongs in a $75K stakes event at Gulfstream Park, was one of the more impressive wins by a two-year-old filly this year. One knock is that the works have just been okay over the Monmouth dirt. It could be a sign that Coco’s Wildcat doesn’t particularly care for the surface. Or, O’Connell might be trying to harness some of her speed and build a bottom into her before her first try at 6 furlongs. It’s tough to not see her have some say in the outcome of the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth on Sunday.
4 – Comforter – 9/2 – There used to be a time when trainer Scott Lake ruled the East Coast. He’s still an exceptionally talented trainer and is having his usual successful year, when winning at 18%. But he’s 0 and 6 at Monmouth. That might not matter considering how fast Comforter was in her last, a 9 length maiden score where she ran the first quarter in :21.4. A bullet work on August 20, 4 furlongs in :47.3, tipped Lake’s hand. Jockey Javier Santiago is going to send and dare the other speed to keep up. If it can’t, then gate-to-wire is a real possibility for this Nobiz Like Shobiz two-year-old.
