The best race on which to wager at Monmouth on Sunday is a $16,000 Hcp going 1 3/8 miles over the turf. There is only an 11% chance of rain hitting the New Jersey track on Sunday, meaning that we shouldn’t have to handicap the race with a bunch of scratches.

2 – Mythical Hero – 10/1 – The nine-year-old gelded son of Empire Maker gets blinkers for this. That should help the Alexandra White trainee remain focused. Mythical Hero is bred to run all day and has been in decent form with 2 wins out of his last 3 races. Yes, the gelding is stepping up in class, but the post position is more than ideal and none of these are world beaters. If jockey Abel Castellano can get Mythical Hero to settle only 3 to 4 lengths off of the pace, Castellano should be in the best position to drive to the wire. That could actually make the difference in this game. The 10 to 1 odds will make this one a serious overlay in this.
3 – Dancing Lounge – 5/2 – This John Servis trainee is one heck of a horse. From 22 races, Dancing Lounge has 8 wins. That’s a fantastic win percentage. He’s finished first twice and second once in his last three races. Dancing Lounge is a straight closer, though, and that could give Kendrick Carmouche too much to do in this. There doesn’t appear to be a lot of speed. But, if there is any horse that appears to be capable of making a trip in a pace less race, Dancing Lounge looks like that horse. He’s on underlay to win at 5/2, but a must use in all exotics.
7 – Grand Rapport – 2/1– Paco Lopez takes the call aboard the morning line chalk that has taken home close to $466,000 in earnings. The now seven-year-old gelding was absolutely fantastic when finishing second in a $62K optional claimer at 1-1/2 miles over the turf two races back. The lone knock is why trainer David Jacobsen, who wins more than his fair share of races, has entered Grand Rapport in this event. With his good form, you’d think that there would be better spots. Still, the chalk is awfully formidable. It just becomes a question of, as a horseplayer, what kind of low odds do you want to swallow?
